This Month's Recognition for C.O.P.S.' Unsung Hero
Concerns of Police Survivors feels May is the perfect time to recognize the Bureau of Justice Assistance, U.S. Department of Justice (BJA) for their dedicated, long-term support. During a month when fallen law enforcement heroes are honored and surviving family members find healing, love, and live renewed during National Police Week, C.O.P.S. could not think of a better time to thank BJA. C.O.P.S. exposure and reputation have been built upon federal funds given to C.O.P.S. through grants from BJA dating back to the late 1980's. The small credit line given to BJA on C.O.P.S.' printed materials does not do justice to the assistance BJA provides. Without their funding and support, C.O.P.S. would not be able to continue its mission of rebuilding shattered lives of the surviving family members of law enforcement killed in the line of duty. |

3 States Pass Blue Alert
Alabama, Georgia, and Maryland recently passed the Blue Alert! C.O.P.S. encourages you to contact your state representatives today and ask them to follow the lead of the other states that are activating the Blue Alert. If you have any questions or need copies of other state legislation/executive orders that have the Blue Alert in place, contact Brooke McKay at brooke_mckay@nationalcops.org. Shown in picture: Alabama Governor Riley signing an Executive Order for the Blue Alert. Also in picture Jim Fazette,f/AL/WI/08, who helped get the Blue Alert passed.
"I would like to echo a thank you to all of you that responded to the email sent out in reference to support the Blue Alert Bill. It is something that I and on behalf of the Maryland Chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors feel very important to get passed into law. I personally feel that too many times the law enforcers of this state are not treated with the respect that they so deserve. The passing of the Blue Alert will provide a system for rapid dissemination of specified information to assist in locating and apprehending specified missing offenders of Law Enforcement. Again I thank each of you that responded so quickly, to Senator Brochin's office."
- Sue Nickerson, President of the Md. Chapter of C.O.P.S. Mother of Ptl. Michael S. Nickerson EOW 2/13/01 |

The Road to Hope
The Road to Hope arrival ceremony will be held at the Pentagon Memorial on May 12, 2010, at 1:00 p.m. The ceremony will conclude the 250-mile journey from Chesapeake, Virginia, to D.C. by Law Enforcement United (LEU), a new organization of law enforcement officers who are also bicycling enthusiasts. PoliceHotels.com will also conclude their 4,000-mile drive across the United States.
LEU is raising funds for C.O.P.S. and Officer Down Memorial Page (ODMP); LEU's donation will help fund the annual, week-long C.O.P.S. Kids Summer Camp scheduled for the last week of July 2010. With 240 attending that camp at a cost of over $125,000, C.O.P.S. appreciates LEU's efforts.
Representatives of PoliceHotels.com will be driving a Hummer displaying the names of every officer killed in the line of duty in 2009. They will be stopping in cities and town that experienced the loss of an officer in 2009. The Hummer is raising money for C.O.P.S. by seeking sponsors of "Miles in Memory", where you can make a donation for a stretch of 10-500 miles in memory of any fallen officer.
A Road to Hope Reception will be held at the Hilton Alexandria on May 13, 2010, at 3:00-4:00 p.m. when Law Enforcement United will present all 2009 surviving families with a memorial flag that was flown during their 3-day, 250-mile bicycle ride.
