Land Donated to C.O.P.S.
Cheney land
On Tuesday, December 8, Richard and Sue Cheney officially transferred 117 acres in southern Virginia to Concerns of Police Survivors. The land was purchased after the supreme sacrifice given by their daughter, Virginia State Trooper Jessica Cheney on January 17, 1998.

The land is valued at $293,000!  It is located in rural Lunenburg County near Victoria, VA.  It is the Cheney's hope that C.O.P.S. will build its own retreat facility on the property.

"We love C.O.P.S. for what the organization had accomplished and feel that the land will aid C.O.P.S. in the healing of many, many survivors in the years to come," concluded the Cheneys.

"This is the largest single contribution C.O.P.S. has ever received from a surviving family and we can't thank the Cheney Family enough," said Jennifer Thacker, National President.
BLUE ALERT Update
After sending out a second series of letters regarding the Blue Alert to state governors, attorney generals, and lieutenant governors, C.O.P.S. has received responses from 14 states: Alabama, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

New legislators will soon be seated in every state, so now would be a good time to contact your legislators, attorneys general, and governors for the Blue Alert. We hope our efforts help this idea become a reality across the nation. By working together, we can show our support for the brave men and women who protect our great nation and ensure that those who do harm to our protectors are quickly captured, fully prosecuted, and appropriately punished.

For more information on the Blue Alert, please contact Brooke McKay at 573.346.4911 or brooke_mckay@nationalcops.org.

Federal Funding Makes "Traumas of Law Enforcement" Possible in 2010
A grant to C.O.P.S. from the Bureau of Justice Assistance, Office of Justice Programs, U.S. Department of Justice will fund the Traumas of Law Enforcement trainings in 2010!  The return of Federal funding for this project will enable C.O.P.S. to redirect the $90,000+ cost for these trainings to other programs of the organization. C.O.P.S. would like to thank BJA for its support of the "Traumas of Law Enforcement" trainings which are now in their 15th year of existence.  This highly-acclaimed training is often said to be "the best training I've had in my long law enforcement career"!

February 1st is the Deadline for Nominations for C.O.P.S. Awards
The Distinguished Service Award: The highest recognition bestowed by Concerns of Police Survivors is the Distinguished Service Award. This award is presented annually to an active or retired law enforcement officer/official or organization for services above and beyond the call of duty when addressing police survivor issues. The law enforcement officer/official or organization must be nominated by a member of the law enforcement family. That means any law enforcement officer, survivor, or police family member may nominate an officer for this distinction. They cannot, however, be nominated by a member of their own family.

The Todd Ricks Award for Volunteerism: Each year C.O.P.S. recognizes an individual(s) who volunteer services to the organization and have contributed greatly to C.O.P.S.' programs with the Todd Ricks Award for Volunteerism. This award is named for Todd Ricks, a U.S. Park Police Motorcycle Officer. Officer Ricks coordinated the motorcycle efforts during National Police Week for several years and was the inaugural recipient of this award. Todd's efforts helped National Police Week events, including all C.O.P.S. activities, run as smoothly as possible by organizing motorcycle escorts for buses to all events, including "C.O.P.S. Kids" events.

The Chapter of the Year Award: The National Board of Concerns of Police Survivors recognizes one chapter each year that has demonstrated a cooperative effort in working with National C.O.P.S., provided services to its membership locally, and focused on meeting the mission of C.O.P.S. Any chapter that feels it meets or exceeds these goals may submit a self-nomination. This is the sixth year of this award. Past Chapter of the Year Awards:
2009: Southern California C.O.P.S.
2008: New Jersey: Survivors of the Triangle
2007: Indiana C.O.P.S.
2006: Michigan C.O.P.S.
2005: Northeast Florida C.O.P.S.

Check the C.O.P.S. website for the criteria for these awards and forward your nominations to lori_graves@nationalcops.org. Call Lori at 573.346.4911 for more information.
Survivors gave $55,425 in Holiday Memorials
Christmas Tree 2009
Each year National C.O.P.S. provides survivors the opportunity to make a holiday contribution in memory of their fallen officer. For each donation, a special ornament is placed on the Christmas tree in the National Office. This year, a special commemorative ornament was placed in memory of the fallen officer for each donation of $100 or more. A different ornament was placed for all other donations.

Survivors gave a total of $55,425 this holiday season to benefit C.O.P.S. With 376 pewter ornaments, we were concerned about the tree falling over!

The commemorative ornaments will be mailed after the New Year to those survivors who contributed $100 or more to C.O.P.S. through this annual fundraising effort.
Fly the Blue
blue ribbon
For the past several years, Concerns of Police Survivors has been encouraging citizens to fly blue ribbons from their car antennas during National Police Week.  This year from May 9 through May 15, seeing thousands of blue ribbons flying from cars would be a tremendous show of support for our fallen officers and those still working the streets. The ribbons should be tied to personal cars and/or police cruisers to show support for law enforcement.  While many law enforcement agencies fly the ribbons during National Police Week, we'd love to see more ribbons on personal vehicles. C.O.P.S. is, however, sending blue ribbons only to those that request them rather than automatically mailing them to the more than 5,000 agencies that have received the ribbons in the past. For blue ribbons FAX your request into C.O.P.S. at 573-346-1414 with your mailing address and the number of blue ribbons you would like to request.
