Greetings!
It's the beginning of another school year, and we're excited to begin our work in preparation for another round of Model UN Conferences! These newsletters are a great way for us to keep in touch with you throughout the year so that you can stay updated on all the great opportunities Global Classrooms offers.
In this issue, you'll find information about this year's committee topics, our updated curriculum, registration information for upcoming events, and an interview with one of our returning interns.  We've also included a short bio on our new Global Classrooms coordinator to help you get to know her a little better.
So feel free to read through and let us know what you think. We look forward to working with you!
Sincerely,

Fatema Kermalli Walji joined UNA-MN over the summer as the new Global Classrooms Program Associate.  She holds a Bachelors degree in International Relations from Rollins College and is currently pursuing her Masters through Middlesex University.  Fatema brings years of experience working with nonprofit organizations and - as a high school Model UN Delegate herself - is excited to be working with Minnesota schools on the Model UN program.

InternsMeet our 2012-13 Interns: Laura Foote

Laura is a returning intern with Global Classrooms and a sophomore at the University of Minnesota. She is majoring in Communications and plans to complete a minor in Management (and possibly History as well). Laura is a native Minnesotan and graduate from Maple Grove Senior High.

We're glad to have her back!

Why did you decide to join the Global Classrooms team?

I was in the Model UN Club in High School and I met Shoko (then Global Classrooms' Program Director) through that.  Towards the end of senior year, Shoko talked to us about interning with Global Classrooms.   I worked as a summer intern on curriculum writing, and then took on the paid position during the school year.  I'd had so much fun as a Model UN delegate that I wanted to continue that experience for others.

What was the best thing about interning with GC?

The people whom I was working with were amazing; I don't think I could have met a better group.  It was also always a fun atmosphere, exchanging stories about what the kids were doing.  Obviously, there were some frustrating points, but it was always cool to see how the students were really engaged and interested, and how they really got into the debates.

What do you like the most about the Model UN?

I like resolution writing because when it comes down to it, the most important part - the reason we all worked so hard - was for the resolutions.  So my favorite parts were writing the resolutions, debating them, explaining how they solved or addressed the problems at hand, and figuring out the best way to convince people to support the resolutions.

What was your favorite memory with Global Classrooms?

I really liked the Augsburg state conference because there was a really good mix of people, with both students who really knew what they were doing and students who were a bit unsure of themselves at the beginning, but by end of day were rock solid.  It was really difficult to give out awards at that conference because everyone in the committee did really well.  It was a very well put-together and organized conference.

What is your favorite food?

Spaghetti!  ...with Marinara sauce.  I eat out sometimes, but homemade pasta is the best.

If you could choose one place to live, where would that be?

I've always wanted to live in Washington State on the coast, around Seattle, and enjoy a nice cloudy day on the beach.

What is your dream job?

Right now I have an internship at the Athletic Communications Office in the University of Minnesota.  The office acts like the middleman between student athletes and the media, helping to arrange media coverage, press conferences, and quote-taking for articles.  I would love to be able to continue this work and do more in-depth mediating and facilitating between athletes and the media because I love sports.  The job lets me combine two things I like.
