Birkie Fever 2012
Cross-country skiiers skiing the Birkie State of the SNOW?

That is the question. With most of us in the US having a lean snow year, it's been a frustrating season for Nordic skiers - racers and non-racers alike. We've been lucky, however, here in the Hayward/Cable area so far. A recent warm spell spared the local trails of much damage with only a few south-facing hills experiencing much melt-off. This last weekend, Birkie trail parking lots were full, the trails were fast and firm, and many skiers reported their best skiing of the season - not too shabby for a tough snow year. With normal temps over the next couple weeks, it looks like a full-length Birkie is possible. The bottom line is: right now the snow is good, even excellent on most parts of the Birkie and Korte trail systems. Keep your fingers crossed. In the short term, come up and ski the Pre-Birkie or the North End Classic , or go for best of both! For those of you who need to "cram" those last few Ks in, get out there. Great conditions DO exist around the area.

To keep up on the current conditions, feel free to call us at (800) 754-8685, and we'll bring you up to speed. Skiers can also go to the trail reports page at skinnyski.com for first-hand reports from skiers and groomers as well as recent trail photos. Other good resources include www.norwiski.com and the trail page at birkie.com.

Vasaloppet is off, Pre-Birkie is ON!

Sadly, the famous Mora Vasaloppet was recently cancelled due to poor snow conditions. This is a blow to a fine tradition, but for the racing-starved masses around the region, the Hayward Lions Pre-Birkie is on! The snow is good, the groomers are ready, and the hills are tough. Stay Sunday for the North End Classic in Cable. Both are fantastic, well-organized races and important fundraisers for great organizations.

New Moon will host a Toko wax clinic Friday evening, February 10th at 5:30p.m. with Olympian John Bauer. John will focus on waxing for the Pre-Birkie. Toko products will be featured, but all questions and ability levels are welcome!

Birkie week at New Moon

Meet Nordic Ski Superstar Vegard Ulvang at New Moon
New Moon is proud to host Norwegian Nordic ski legend Vegard Ulvang at the store Sunday, February 26th at 10a.m. Three-time Olympic Gold and two-time World Championship Gold medalist Ulvang is a modern-day folk hero in Norway. He abruptly abandoned his Olympic training program in the Italian Dolomites with the Norwegian National Team in October 1993 and flew back to Norway to help search for his brother, Ketil, who had disappeared while running in the wilderness of northern Norway near his family's home. With skis in hand, Vegard led the search through snow storms and rugged terrain for 14 days. Ketil was found dead in June of 1994, having apparently drowned in an arctic lake.

Ulvang will be skiing the 2012 Birkie in support of the MS "Ski For The Cure" Program. Details of this great program are found later in this newsletter.

Our weekly grinding schedule will resume after Birkie.

Birkie waxing service

New Moon will again be offering professional race waxing services http://www.newmoonski.com/messages/birkie_2012.html . Birkie waxing is offered on a strict, first come, first served basis. We encourage skiers to ship their race skis ahead of time to ensure a spot in line. If you ship them, be sure they arrive by Tuesday 2-21, and include complete payment and contact information. View our Birkie waxing menu. It will include low-fluoro , pure-fluoro glide waxing, as well as kick waking options. Final wax choices are made Thursday and Friday. Be sure to send or drop-off your skis scraped and stripped of all kick wax. Dirty skis will incur additional clean-up charges. All Birkie waxing is done off-site and finished skis will be available for pick-up at New Moon Friday after 4 p.m., NO EXCEPTIONS.

Other cool stuff…

IPC Nordic World Cup

We were all humbled by the amazing athletes competing at the recent IPC Nordic World Cup event held at nearby Telemark Resort in January. The IPC is the international governing body for Paralympic events. The New Moon Crew was fortunate to meet many of the teams and athletes from around the world. Team and athlete pictures are posted at our Facebook page. If you have the opportunity to attend an IPC event in the future, do it—it is a remarkable experience!

Cross Country skiing… Literally!

Our super-athlete staffers and CXC team members, Carolyn and Santi Ocariz, will embark on a coast-to-coast rollerski adventure, Ski Across America, shortly after the Birkie to raise funds for the charitable organization Food for the Poor Inc. Their journey will take them from Charleston, SC to San Francisco, CA over the course of three months. Please visit their website and consider making a donation toward their noble cause.

Ski For The Cure

Wear the MS Pin, win a prize! Team up with the National and Wisconsin Chapters of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society to help fund MS research. Again for 2012, Birkie and Korte skiers wearing the pin will have a chance to win prizes at the finish line from Birkie sponsors including Gift Cards from New Moon! Not skiing the Birkie? No problem—wear the pin proudly knowing that you're helping a great cause. For more information, visit the Birkie Ski For The Cure web page. All proceeds for MS Pin sales are forwarded directly to the MS Society.

New Moon offers the Ski For The Cure MS pins in-store and on the web.

Crazy Casey Krueger

Congrats to Casey, former New Mooner and son of New Moon Shipping Dept superstar, Judy Krueger! Casey won the ski division of the 2012 Arrowhead 135 in 22 hours, 5 minutes, destroying the old record by an outrageous 14 hours in the process. He finished over 12 hours ahead of the next skier, and even handily beat a majority of the biker field! The "Arrowhead" is a ski, bike, or run, 135-mile adventure race through the wilds of far Northern Minnesota. All racers are required to be fully self-sufficient if necessary and carry a full compliment of survival gear - 35 lbs worth in Casey's case. Their website has a full recap of the event. His skis did take a beating during the race, and we're proud that New Moon will be stone grinding his well-worn, record-setting skis. Go get some sleep, Casey!

Ski the Birkie! Good luck and…Think snow!
