We were saddened this past month by the passing of one of our beloved FSU Faculty members and Summer Music Camp instructors, Professor Michael Allen.  Dr. Allen was a Professor of Music Education at FSU, also serving as editor-in-chief of the Florida Music Director and on the editorial board of the Journal of String Research. Dr. Allen has published articles in the Journal of Music Therapy, The Instrumentalist, American String Teacher, Update: Applications of Research in Music Education, Florida Music Director, and The Bulletin for the Council for Research in Music Education. In addition, he is co-author of Essential Elements for Strings, a comprehensive string method book series and Teaching Music Through Performance in Orchestra.  Dr. Allen was coordinator of the String Orchestra Camp for many years and will be greatly missed.  A new String Orchestra Camp Coordinator will be announced in the coming months.

It's time to celebrate 70 years of camp!
Greetings!

We're ready to kick off the 2011 camp season!  2010 was one of our biggest and best years ever and we can't wait to share everything that we have in store for our special 70th anniversary year.   As you will see below, we have added an Elementary Music Day Camp and we have split Jazz Ensemble Camp into two camps:  one for Senior High students and one for Middle School student.  We're also making some changes to our Guitar Workshop program and, best of all, we will be back in the newly renovated Ruby Diamond Auditorium!  In addition, four of our camps (Senior High Band, String Orchestra, Middle School & Choral Camp)  will perform specially commissioned pieces of music written in celebration of our anniversary.  Details for all of these camp changes will be available in the coming weeks on our website and in future newsletters, so stay tuned.

A Grand Reopening of Ruby Diamond: Commemorating 100 years of excellence within the College of Music

2011 not only marks the 70th Anniversary of the FSU Summer Music Camps,  it also marks the 100th anniversary of the FSU College of Music and the grand reopening of the newly renovated Ruby Diamond Auditorium.  The renovation of Ruby Diamond was a two year endeavor that transformed a general use auditorium into a world class performance hall, certain to be one of the finest acoustic spaces in the region.  The Summer Music Camps will be fortunate enough to use this outstanding space, beginning with the summer of 2011!  In addition, the summer camps have commissioned four new pieces to be performed by the Senior High Band Camp, String Orchestra camp, Choral Ensemble Camp and Middle School Band Camp to help commemorate this special occasion.

To honor these historic milestones, the FSU College of Music is pleased to present several celebratory concerts, including a special gala event in Ruby Diamond on Friday, October 8 at 8pm:  A Grand Reopening of Ruby Diamond: Commemorating 100 years of excellence within the College of Music. University ensembles will perform several newly commissioned works for the event, including Ellen Taaffe Zwilich's Fanfare, Reminiscence and Celebration (University Symphony Orchestra), Scott McAllister's Barnburner (Wind Orchestra), The Jewel Within by Paul McKee (Jazz Ensemble I) and Ola Gjeilo's Rays of Light (Combined Choruses of 750 voices) as well as other selections.

If you live in the area and are interested in attending this special event, act quickly to secure your seats! Seats are reserved (black tie optional).  Tickets are available through the College of Music Box Office, located in the lobby of Ruby Diamond Auditorium. Cash or checks only (made payable to FSU) - no credit or debit cards. The College of Music Box Office is open Monday-Friday from 11:00 am-2:00 pm, beginning September 13. Please call 645-7949 for more information.

A Place For Music Lovers
Featuring more than three thousand instruments and artifacts from around the world, and an ongoing program of exciting live performances, the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) opened to the public on April 24 in Phoenix, Arizona.  The museum's galleries feature advanced wireless technology and high-resolution video screens, enabling museum guests to see instruments, hear their sounds, and observe them being played in their original settings-performances that are often as spectacular as the instruments. Select exhibits offer an insider's view of how instruments work, the workshop displays detail the instrument-building process, and the Experience Gallery features musical instruments that guests can touch and play.

If Phoenix is too far for you to see this great museum in person, CBS Sunday Morning recently presented a segment which you can watch the video by clicking here or explore the museums website at:  http://www.themim.org
Stay tuned for updates on camp rates, updated camp descriptions and our new camp videos!  This fall will be packed with information to help you share in our 70th Anniversary celebration!

Sincerely,
Your Friends at the FSU Summer Music Camps
