Local Produce Update
This week the farms seem to be loaded with a wonderful variety of produce.
This week's baskets feature Spaghetti Squash, Lettuce, Tomatoes, Pickling Cucumbers, Red Onions, Beets, Carrots, Pears, Plums, Apples, Broccoli Raab, Garlic, Potatoes & More!
Corn has officially ended sooner than we predicted due to quality issues. Peaches have also officially ended. Pickling Cucumbers have returned for one more hoorah.
We have some fun new varieties of Winter Squash arriving. Holiday Farm in Dalton, MA, is bringing Payson Squash which has the shape of an Acorn but the color of a Butternut. They are also supplying us with some red & green Buttercup squash & heirloom decorative Pumpkins. Sweet Dumpling Squa sh makes it's appearance as does the Spaghetti Squash. Be sure to check out our Spaghetti Squash recipe in this week's basket newsletter recommended by a customer!
This week's Apple varieties remain the same. Macoun's still need another week to size up. But we do have Local Bosc & Bartlett Pears and Plums.
Last Minute Update - Kitchen Garden Farm, Sunderland, MA just called to report they will supply us with Broccoli, Red & Yellow Peppers, Lettuce, Heirloom Tomatoes, Tendersweet & Napa Cabbage for this week!

Berkshire Organics' Team Grows
If you shop in the Berkshire Organics Market, you may have noticed some new faces recently. You may observe the people who work in the market are not your average register clerks. They are a professional, educated group who are passionate about being a part of a small, local & organic business that focuses on the local farms, community and food safety.
"Assembling such a dedicated team has taken time and will always be a work in progress", says owner, Aleisha Gibbons. "But we feel very good about the people who are with us for the Fall and Winter season."
Until this summer, Gibbons was running t he front counter mostly by herself. "Being the register clerk for the first several years of business really opened my eyes to the importance of customer service. I realized how important of a role the person plays who greets customers, checks them out at the register, and answers questions. They are representing the business and it's important this person is knowledgeable, professional, and courteous at all times, no matter what."
But don't think for a minute Gibbons is any less hands-on. "Even though I may not be checking customers out at the register as much, I am still at the market six days a week as any owner should be. I have one day a week I work from my home office placing orders, calling farmers and such. Brian is there seven days a week. The produce is always our top priority so we get there early and start sorting through everything to make sure everything is as fresh as possible."
"Owning a market that is open seven days a week is very intense and you have to be dedicated 100% but we love doing it. The loyal customers we have is what makes it all worth it. Seeing the store grow over the last few years has also made the hard work rewarding. We're excited we have finally reached a place where we can add more staff to offer more service and assistance to our customers" says Gibbons.
In the coming weeks we will introduce you to the market team in our newsletter.
Meet Josh - He's Lost 100 lbs
by Changing His Diet!
Josh Tiska began working at Berkshire Organics over the summer, and we are delighted to have him as a part of our team. Josh wears several different hats at Berkshire Organics. He is our master basket backer on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. He helps owner, Brian Gibbons, with many back of house tasks on Sundays and Mondays and he has also just started working in the store. He's got a strong work ethic, a kind manner, and he is a truly fantastic example of what eating healthfully can do for a person's body. As a result of changing his eating habits, Josh has lost over 100 pounds, and he continues to maintain a healthy weight with healthy food choices.
It all started about 10 years ago, when Josh was in school at MCLA in North Adams. After a lifetime of meat and potatoes and a year of unhealthy eating in the student dining hall, Josh found himself at 255 pounds. Some of his friends were vegetarian or vegan, and Josh began to dabble in a meatless diet. The change didn't happen overnight, but he quickly noticed that when he had been eating a low-fat, vegetarian diet for a few days, he felt fantastic; however when he went back to meat, fats, and processed foods-even in small doses-he felt sick. Deciding that he had had enough of feeling terrible, he made the switch to a completely vegetarian lifestyle, and cut most fats, processed foods, and refined sugars out of his diet altogether. As he began to lose weight, he also started to embrace a more active lifestyle, as well as read a great deal about food and health. He especially recommends "The China Study" by Dr. T. Colin Campbell, "The Engine 2 Diet" by Rip Esselstyn, and "Eat to Live" by Dr. Joel Fuhrman for those who are interested in learning more about health and weight loss through vegetarianism and veganism. With the continued combination of a healthy vegetarian diet and increased exercise, Josh has managed to lose over 100 pounds, with the majority of weight loss taking place in just the past year and a half. As he puts it, "At 28, I'm healthier, happier, and 30 pounds lighter than I was in my late teens."
Josh feels that working at Berkshire Organics is a natural fit for him, and we couldn't agree more. Being surrounded by fresh, local produce and other healthy foods allows for Josh to continue making smart choices about what he eats. Additionally, his inspirational story has motivated a few other staff members to evaluate their food consumption and make some healthier choices. Needless to say, we are thrilled to have a member of our team whose personal story so clearly reflects the benefits of healthy eating.

NEW LOCAL BREAD
for Delivery & Market Customers
Berkshire Organics is pleased to announce they will now be offering fresh, baked bread from Rockhill Bakehouse in Glens Falls, NY. While we will continue to offer Berkshire Mountain Bakery Breads, Housantic, MA (arrives Tues & Fri mornings) and Bread Euphoria Breads, Williamsburg, MA (arrives Wed noon), we have finally found a non-sourdough option that is made locally. Rockhill Bakehouse will deliver to Berkshire Organics Thursday mornings and more days can be added if the demand increases.
About Their Ingredients: What we are doing is working in the direction of avoiding GMOs and using local ingredients as much as possible. We don't use GMO flour; about 40% of the flour we use is certified organic, and at this point in time, about 40% is flour grown in NY State. We're always seeking to improve these things while keeping our products affordable, and we intend to keep taking steps forward as time goes on.

Awards & Reviews on Rockhill Bakehouse:
Winner of The Zagat Marketplace Award: 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 & 2005.
NYTimes - "But the very best local example of this fragrant rye is made by the artisanal Rock Hill Bakehouse in Glens Falls, N.Y., and sold at the Union Square Greenmarket on Saturdays. Chewy and yeasty, with a convincingly tan sourdough color, this bread has a firm, tight crumb and plenty of caraway."
Bernard Clayton - "Rock Hill's Founder "probably knows more about bread and baking than anyone east of the Appalachians"
Vogue Magazine (Jeffrey Steingarten) - Rock Hill is "the Paragon of Purism"
STAFF REVIEWS
Rockhill Bakehouse Panne Paesano
by Maya Greene
Ever since we first tasted Rock Hill Bakehouse breads at Berkshire Organics last week, I've been daydreaming about the chewy, airy, delicious Panne Paesano. I brought home a chunk of it, and proceeded to dip it in hummus, melt cheese over it, and occasionally just smell it. This is seriously some of the best bread I have ever had-and I spent time all over Europe. In addition to their enormous "loaf of heaven" (my nickname for the Pain de Panne Paesano 32 oz), they also bake some phenomenal Jewish Rye and Pumpernickel varieties. These all come sliced, so they're perfect for sandwiches. The Panne Paesano is unsliced, but I love it that way; it's the ideal texture for tearing off chunks and dipping in oil, hummus, or just eating as is. I know that Berkshire Organics already carries several wonderful breads from a few terrific local bakeries; let's just consider Rock Hill a great edition to the mix.

Berkshire Organics School Delivery Program (S.E.E.D.S) on Hold
Until We Raise $5,000!
Help Us Get Fresh Produce Into Our Local Schools

It's Harvest Week for the Pittsfield Schools and Berkshire Organics delivered fresh, local produce to 12 schools in and around the city! This week the schools received 600 lbs of Apples from Hilltop Orchard, Richmond, MA, 220 lbs of Carrots Sticks from Lakeside Organics, Hadley, MA and 325 lbs of Tomatoes from Warner Farm, Sunderland, MA. This is a volunteer (no-profit) service Berkshire Organics offers to the local community. Berkshire Organics donates their time, vehicles and coolers while passing on the wholesale price to the school so the school can offer produce instead of processed foods.
Last year we also delivered to the Cheshire/Adams Schools, Dalton Schools and Williamstown Schools from September through December. Many more schools in the Berkshires have expressed interest in receiving produce as well but the program needs support. Brian and Aleisha Gibbons donated their time to make this happen but it was taking them away from running Berkshire Organics. So the program is on hold until they can raise $5,000 to pay for a delivery driver 1-2 days a week for the fall/winter season. Berkshire Organics will continue to donate their vans, time ordering from the farms, and coolers. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, please let us know. The schools want this fresh produce which is amazing! We just need to figure out how to raise a small amount of money to help keep the program going. Thanks for your support!
To keep this program going, we need donations from the local community - please contact info@berkshireorganicsseeds.org
Can't Donate? Thank You for Your Support by Receiving Delivery or Shopping In Our Market!
Berkshire Organics provides services to the Pittsfield Schools to ensure they are serving kids sustainable, local produce. They do this at no profit to the organization! The owners simply roll up their sleeves and spend extra hours working all weekend... to ensure that the community that has helped them be so successful is also taking care of their school kids. Remember this the next time you need to shop for produce - shopping at Berkshire Organics is convenient AND supports the local school lunch movement toward healthier options! - Kim

Who is Showing Their Support for Proposition 37?
By Maya Greene for Berkshire Organics
Over the past few weeks, we've been taking a close look at The California Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act. What we found was that there are a lot of really big food and agricultural industries (such as Coca-Cola, Kellogg, and of course, Monsanto) that are spending big bucks to defeat Proposition 37 in November's vote. But we also found a lot of grassroots organizations and food companies that are showing their support for GMO labeling in California and beyond. We wanted to give "props" to those who support Prop 37, and we hope that you use this pie chart (created using information found at Organicconsumersfund.org) to help you make informed decisions as a consumer.
*Several Companies have pledged smaller amounts which have added up to over $500,000. These companies are listed below:
