What's New on the Farm?
Berry Best Farm is helping to preserve open space in Maine.
View from Berry Best

Several things, but perhaps our greatest achievement this year was to complete our Conservation Easement with the Three Rivers Land Trust (3RLT). The loss of viable farmland in York County is becoming an increasing concern. Have you noticed how often housing developers have snatched up open fields for housing--land not likely to be ever tilled again, land lost as open space, land available for food production, pasture or potential forest.

We have been concerned and thinking about this issue for some time, but when a nearby field recently sprouted seven houses, we knew it was time to put actions in place. For the past 10 years, 3RLT has been helping landowners preserve and conserve our natural resources. With the help of 3RLT volunteers and through numerous meetings an agreement was drawn up which protects our farm forever from development to be enjoyed by future generations.

Jam raspberry jars and sugar
I tried peach-raspberry last fall--quite a tasty spread! SO this is the newest variety. 'Old' favorites include: Blue-Rasp, Raspberry, Blueberry, Peach, and Peach Honey.

Update: Fruit on the Farm

Blueberries on bush
Blueberries
So far the crop looks good; there are plenty of blossoms.

Peaches
peaches
We anticipate having a great peach crop this year. The new section of peaches we planted a few years ago produced very well last year. Since some of our older peach trees are declining, we decided to plant a few more replacements this spring. These new trees include several Nectarines! You know, the fuzz-less peaches. However, it will take about three years to harvest a crop.

Raspberries raspberries
The raspberry variety, Killarney, planted last year should be ready to pick by mid-July. Watch your email or check our website for an exact date beginning in July. The old bed of Latham is still producing a small crop too.

Buddy and Jack

Last week we repaired fences. Buddy and Jack, our horses, are extremely happy to be out eating the grass instead of confined to their winter dirt paddock and watching the grass grow. The lawn mowers are working well. This time of year it is nearly impossible to keep up with the grass!! Mowing takes a LOT of time!! Chris is nearly finished pruning the Blueberries while John is taking care of the peaches. John also plants and maintains our family garden. Ah, spring--not enough hours in the day.
