Goochland Farmers Market, Saturday, July 31, 2010

Dear Goochland Farmers Market Customers,

Hope to see everyone decked out in their best overalls for our overall themed Kids Day this Saturday, July 31 from 8 am until noon!  The Goochland Farmers Market is sponsored by the Center for Rural Culture.  As always, the market will be held at Grace Episcopal Church, 2955 River Road West  in Goochland Courthouse.  Please do not bring dogs to the market, but do bring cloth bags for your purchases.  We happily accept Visa, MasterCard and Discover for all of our vendors at the Center for Rural Culture booth and also have gift certificates available. If you are unable to make it to the market this week, this is a great time to sign up for our food co-op since the registration fee has been reduced!  Please read on to learn more about the market and our co-op. As with all of our correspondence, you have the option to forward our e-mails to a friend or share them on Facebook or Twitter at the bottom left of the e-mail.

Overall, I think it is going to be a great day!

Jane Conner
Market Manager

P.s.  Check out this inspiring story that one of our vendors shared with me about a fourteen year old who started her own C.S.A.!

Shasta, California. She is the 2009 and 2010 Fiddler's Grove Junior Mandolin Champion.  Harper also enjoys playing basketball and hanging out with friends.

mutton_bustinIt's Overall Day for our third Kids Day this Saturday. We encourage kids of all ages to come out dressed in their favorite overalls. You'll be glad you have them on when you're Mutton Bustin with Carney Man Productions, LLC.  (trying to hang onto an ornery sheep is no easy thing) and participating in the Greased Pig Catching Contest! You'll also need them as you help Goochland Fire-Rescue put out the fire in their burning house. And sometimes the seeds from the Watermelon Spitting Contest don't go exactly where they should, so it's best to be covered up. Another good reason for overalls is when you're exploring compost layering, flat painting and seed starting with Backyard Farmer (they'll have some info for the grown-ups, too).

books
After all of that activity, it'll be nice to head over to Storyland, where local dentist Dr. Peter Murchie presents Read Aloud Virginia's Storyland to kick off his Children's Book Drive and promote children's literacy. There will be literary characters, story time, and a table set up for children to color their favorite books. These drawings will be sent to CBS Channel 6 and they may be chosen to air in their morning news program "Virginia This Morning"! At 10:15 am Dr. Murchie will entertain children with a special Smiles for Life Story Time. Parents are encouraged to drop off their gently used children's books to kick start the August book drive. For more information on the book drive please click here.

watermelonThink you have what it takes to win our annual watermelon seed spitting contest?  If so, please join us at 10 am and get to spitting!  There will be a kid and a grown-up contest.  (Thank you to Deer Run Farm for donating the watermelons!)  Judging for our best overall overalls contest, for kids and adults as well, will be at 11 am.  Don't forget to shop at our Kid Vendor booths under the big tent, as well as all of our grown-up market vendors. At 10:30 am each Saturday, we will hold a raffle.  Raffle items vary weekly, so be sure to check in  at the Center for Rural Culture booth to see what exciting items are up for grabs this week!   Raffle tickets are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00; so get your tickets early and shop around until the drawing.
