What's so Miraculous about this life?
I've been asked a few times why I chose to name this bulletin, "Miraculous Life." And the simple answer is this: I choose to view this experience we're all sharing as a miraculous event.
I choose to view the fact that you're reading this as miraculous, that I'm writing it as miraculous, that you and I ever connected somehow as miraculous, that you and I ever happened as miraculous.
We can talk about all the incomprehensible improbabilities of all of this to substantiate it's miraculousness. For instance, the ratio of particles to anti-particles at the moment of The Big Bang that had to be precisely what it was in order for anything to form (vs. dissipating like a puff of smoke, or collapsing in upon itself to form one massive black hole).
 Or that the mass of a neutron needs to be precisely what it is in order for atoms to ever have formed. Or that the first atoms were hydrogen atoms and that the strong force that holds the nucleus of an atom were even a fraction off in either direction, stars would never have formed. Gravitational and electromagnetic forces needed to be precisely what they were in order for stars to evolve into supernova - from which the heavy elements (carbon and oxygen - the building blocks of biological organisms) to occur. That the mass of our moon needed to be precisely what is in order for our atmosphere to form in such a way as to support life.
Or that each life is the result of a 1:250,000,000 sperm lottery win!
Or we can talk about the improbability of you ever even getting the chance to win that 1:250 million lottery. Both of your parents had to win their own lottery. What were the chances of your parents ever meeting in such a way that they did? Think of all the events that needed to happen since their own births in order for that to have happened. You can't. You couldn't possibly know that your great great great grandfather happened to stop to help fix a stranger's wagon wheel and as a consequence of that decision, he was invited to share supper with the family of the man who he helped. That evening, at dinner, he was introduced to the man's neighbor. They became friends. Two years later, his friend introduced him to the woman who would later become your great great great grandmother. And so on.
That I'm here to write this to you, and that you're here to read it, and that the internet is permitting this to instantly appear on screens across the globe - is miraculous. So is the hummingbird outside my window a moment ago. So is photosynthesis. Respiration. Manatees. Diamonds. Mud. Love. Oh, and beer.
All miraculous. That's why I include the Einstein quote each time at the top of these messages....
Choose to live your life as though everything is a miracle. Choose to redirect your thoughts when you're forgetting that you ARE a miracle and that you're amidst miracles in every moment. Be in a state of perpetual celebration of that fact. Cause it's pretty cool, this Miraculous Life! |
