SYNCHRONICITY AND REUNION  Carl Jung coined the term "synchronicity" in the early 1900's and it can be defined as the experience of two or more events that are apparently causally unrelated occurring together in a meaningful manner. Or more simply put: "meaningful coincidence".
Each of us has experienced these coincidences. Many times. There's debate in the scientific world, however, about whether or not synchronicity actually exists, whether events are indeed "synchronized". Critics suggest that it's nothing more than "confirmation bias", or the tendency to search for or interpret new information in a way that confirms one's preconceptions and avoids information and interpretations that contradict prior beliefs. Or that synchronicity is nothing more than "apophenia" - the ability of the human mind to find meaning and significance where there is none.
This past Sunday was Mother's Day and last Monday was my birthday. In light of these two dates/events I wanted to share with you my best synchronicity story...it's really difficult for me to assume that there's nothing significant about this. You be the judge.
Three years ago I'm celebrating my best friend, Tom Kirsch's, birthday on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon in April at a nearby resort with his mother and two brothers. His wonderful mother, Carmen, who I adore, asked me how the search was going for my biological mother. (Carmen knew I was adopted and was involved in a 20 year biological family search, and she'd ask me that every time she saw me - which is about once or twice a year.) I thanked her for always asking and told her nothing was going on at the moment, but that I had actually just taken the files back out of the cabinet, and that I might resume my research soon.
Tom and I were sharing stories about our recent trip to Florence, Italy. He and I have traveled quite a bit together to places like Key West, Mexico, Hawaii, Jamaica, and as I mentioned, recently to Italy. Carmen proceeds to advise us that our next travel destination is going to be Istanbul, Turkey. Turkey. She tells us we're going to Istanbul, Turkey. Tom and I look at each other with curious expressions, and ask her what the hell for? She tells us she just returned from there and that we'd love it. We shrug and say, "Fine, let's go to Turkey."
The next day I get an email from Anne Valez, one of three women in Florida (where I was born) who refer to themselves, very appropriately, as "The Search Angels". They are: Anne Valez, a birthmother; Kathy Pavlick, an Adoptee; and Michelle Gross, a Birth Half-Sister. They voluntarily assist Floridians in the adoption triad with their searches. And they certainly are Angels. The email had a link to an adoption reunion registry and the following message:
Ya'll check out the above link. Could this be a MATCH?? I just got off the phone with Kathy and she will be checking on this with you tomorrow, Chris.
I've got my fingers crossed and prayers going that this is your biological parents, Chris.

The link took me to an adoption.com page with contact information for a woman named Linda. Her profile matched what little information I had - birthdate, birthplace, etc. And it had a button that said "Contact Linda". I clicked it and wrote the following message:
What an exciting email message! What an honor it is for me to even get to write
this. Regardless of the outcome.
Linda, my name is Chris Dorris, and almost exactly 39 years ago, an amazing
woman courageously brought me into this world. For 29 of those years, since the
moment I became aware of the fact that I was adopted, I have wanted to find her.
I am writing you today to ask you if you are that woman.
There is a group of amazing women in Florida, who very appropriately refer to
themselves as Search Angels. They contacted me last night via email with your
information here on adoption.com. I understand that there is a strong likelihood
that I am not your child, but I sure would like to know. And regardless, I would
like to take this opportunity to thank you - which I will do again and again,
profusely, if it turns out that you are my mother - for having had the courage
to go through everything you went through to bear your child.
I will eagerly anticipate your response.

I included a link to my website with video of me. A day later, this is the reply:

thank you for your message. i am so shocked i can not really answer to much right now. i may or may not be your mother. ı am from ny not nj and my mother,s famıly is from sarasota. ın fact she stıill lives there.
i am also sorry for thıs poorly writen email meassage but i am ın istanbul turkey and the key borads here are so hard to use i cannot use punctuation
ı must say you may be my son because i went to your website and you have a strong resumblance to the person the that would your father.
tomorrow night i go to florence italy for several weeks and wıll have email access there. here i am ın the hotel lobby computer and ın shock so ıt ıs hrd to react.
ıt also looks like we do sımılar kınd of work. not matter what the dna ıs we wıll be strongly connected.

Did you catch all that?! She's on her way to Florence, Italy from Istanbul, Turkey. And her name is Linda KIRSCH.
Her last name is KIRSCH!!! The same last name as my best friend - whose mother had just one day earlier asked me how my search was going and who told us that we're going to Istanbul, Turkey! Apophenia? No meaning or significance to this? Right. It's miraculous! Do I believe in synchronicity? You're damn right I do! Pay attention to the coincidences in your life. There is great magic in the invisible energies. We're just getting sophisticated enough now to begin to understand the mechanics of these things.
