| Air Corps Pilatus PC-9M Crash |
The ill fated aircraft performing at the Clifden airshow earlier this year

Monday October 12th marked a sad day for Irish Aviation and the Air Corps in particular as news broke that a Pilatus PC-9M had crashed in Co. Galway. That evening, three Pilatus PC-9M's departed Baldonnel shortly before 6pm on a flight training sortie to the west. The three were on individual missions and were not in formation. At around 6.20pm at a remote area near Cornamona in Connemara, Co Galway a PC-9 (serial 265) was seen flying over at low level and a loud bang was heard shortly afterwards. The alarm was raised by locals and a Coastguard helicopter located the wreckage a short while later. The two other PC-9's recovered to Galway Airport. Investigations are being carried out by the Irish Air Corps and the AAIU. The bodies two pilots were found located in the wreckage. They were named as Captain Derek Furniss (32) and Cadet David Jevens (22). Captain Derek Furniss joined the Defence Forces in October 1994 and is a qualified pilot since 1996 and a qualified flight instructor since 1999. He has over 3,000 flight hours and was the Chief Flight Instructor on the Pilatus aircraft and member of the Air Corps PC-9 Display Team. Derek, originally from Ballinteer, Dublin 16 was single and living with his partner in Dublin. Cadet David Jevens joined the Defence Forces as an Air Corps Cadet in 2006 and was at the advanced stages of flight training on the PC-9 with over 160 flight hours and 50 simulator training hours over the past three years flight training. He was due for commissioning as a pilot later this year. David was single and from Glynn, Co. Wexford.

The cockpit voice and flight data recorders were recovered from the aircraft the following morning when the bodies were also removed from the scene. As the investigation continues into the causes of the crash of the PC-9, General Officer Commanding the Air Corps, Brigadier General Ralph James summed up the mood at the moment by saying: "The Air Corps is devastated by the loss these two very fine young men. The mood here is very sombre. Derek was a consummate professional who set and drove standards in all his work in Baldonnel. David was living his life's dream to become an Air Corps pilot and was on the cusp of achieving that later in the year with his classmates. Their loss is felt deeply here in Casement but also within the family's I have met and the community's they are from."
