Cooper Cares Goes Beyond the Classroom

The Cooper girls' cross country team thought they had a game day, but instead took a run to Begin Park in New Hope where they were given trash bags and gloves and assigned to a "team."  Their task was to run around Begin Park and Hosterman Field across the street and pick up trash as a team.  The team that collected the most garbage "won" the game! The 15 athletes who participated completed 6 hours of community service.  Well done Lady Hawks!

Spotlight on Early Childhood Education
Early Childhood Programs Receive Prestigious 4-Star Award

Robbinsdale Area Schools Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) preschool, Family Literacy, and Creative Play Preschool at New Hope Learning Center, Sonnesyn Elementary, and Zachary Lane Elementary schools have earned the highest rating, four stars, from Parent Aware.

Parent Aware helps parents in Minnesota find childcare and early education providers that are focused on excellent early learning and kindergarten readiness.  The program has a one- to four- star rating system, which measures best practices identified by research that help children succeed in kindergarten and beyond. To earn the four star rating, programs must use a curriculum that is aligned with the Minnesota Early Childhood Indicators of Progress (ECIP) and all lead childcare providers and/or lead teachers must complete at least eight hours of training on the implementation of the curriculum.  Click here to read more!

Highview Students Learn Life Skills during the Summer

The old Chinese proverb, "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day.  Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime" came to life this summer for nine students in the Robbinsdale Area Schools' Highview Alternative Program, and it was a life lesson the students will never forget.

Dustin Dobitz, science teacher at Highview, along with his colleague, Jim Wangensteen, took the students to the Laketrails Base Camp in Lake of the Woods for a nine-day wilderness trip.  It's an annual trip that students and staff at Highview take, and they begin planning for it in the spring.  Students learn to survive in the wilderness, dealing with sun, wind, rain, campfire cooking, tent camping, canoeing, portaging and more.   Click here to read more!
