| Nutrition Standards for School Meals Updated for School Year
This fall, our school cafeterias are meeting new federal nutrition standards, ensuring that meals are even more healthy and well-balanced, while providing students all the nutrition they need to succeed at school. Starting this year, students will receive larger servings of vegetable s and fruits, a wider variety of vegetables and more rich whole-grain products.
Although the portion sizes of the protein and grains are smaller, the new lunch menu requirements provide the same recommended amount of calories as last year. Students will be encouraged to take a fruit and a vegetable choice with their lunches which is a shift in calories from grains and entree items.
Robbinsdale Area Schools has had healthy food options for students for many years by providing different fruit/vegetable choices at lunch and by participating in Farm 2 School and other programs. As an example of healthy eating, students chose a salad as their entrée over 31,000 times last year! Our school nutrition staff has found great ways to get students excited about healthy food choices and we'll continue to work on creative solutions to ensure healthy foods appeal to students. Encourage your student to try a new fruit or vegetable with their lunch! Click here to read more.
