Both High Schools Named to Washington Post High School Challenge List

AHS logoRobbinsdale Armstrong and Robbinsdale Cooper High Schools have earned a place on the 2012 Washington Post High School Challenge List.  Armstrong placed eighth in the state of Minnesota - behind only St. Louis Park, Edina, Southwest (Minneapolis), CCHS logoentral (St. Paul), Minnetonka, and St. Anthony Village, and was #596 nationally.  Cooper placed #27 in Minnesota and #1875 nationally.

The Post's ranking takes the total number of Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB) and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests given at a school each year and divide by the number of seniors who graduate.  This is called the Challenge Index.  The schools are ranked in order of that index.  Only about nine percent of the approximately 22,000 U.S. public high schools made this list.

Zachary Lane Rated One of the Top in Minnesota

Zachary Lane Elementary School received one of the highest ratings in the state on the recent Multiple Measurement Ratings (MMR), ranking 16th in the state in elementary schools.  Schools earn points in each of four categories:  proficiency on the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (MCAs), student growth on the MCAs, achievement gap reduction and, in the case of high schools, graduation rates.  Their focus rating (FR) was one of the highest in the state for any school, ranking 17th.

The scores released Tuesday, May 22 were part of the state waiver from the federal No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB).  Zachary Lane had an MMR of 94.24% and a Focus Rating (FR) of 96.50%.

An Eagle Among the Falcons

Mike Madson, a junior at Armstrong High School, recently completed his Eagle Scout project, which involved planning and constructing a garden for third grade science students at Zachary Lane Elementary School.  Becoming an Eagle Scout is no easy feat, and many district members contributed to the success of this project, including Armstrong High School Honor Society students, Robbinsdale Robins Adapted Physically Impaired sports teammates, and Jim Gerber, Facilities Program Director.  Congratulations on a job well done!
