Michaela BunkeArmstrong AP Students Head to State Again

 

For the second year in a row, a Robbinsdale Armstrong Advanced Placement macroeconomics student is a finalist for the Minneapolis Federal Reserve Essay Contest.  Michaela Bunke has won $100 for being named a finalist for her essay on "What is the Value of Higher Education?" with the possibility of $500 more and a summer internship at the Federal Reserve.  Both she and Economics teacher, James Redelsheimer, will be honored at a reception at the Minneapolis Federal Reserve Bank on May 4th.  

 

Four of Redelsheimer's other students are headed to a state competition in economics as well. The Armstrong team participating in the Minnesota Council on Economic Education's Personal Finance Decathlon has qualified for the state finals, which will be held on April 26.  The team, made up of Eleanor Powell, Ben Jones, David Wixon, and Duncan Mincks, placed second out of 87 teams competing.  Click here to read more.

Robbinsdale Cooper High School has been selected to participate in the University of Minnesota Ramp-Up to Readiness Network.  More than 50 schools from across Minnesota applied to participate in this program which will begin in the fall of 2012.  Ramp-Up to Readiness is a schoolwide guidance program designed to increase the number and diversity of students who graduate high school with the skill set and knowledge that is necessary to succeed in a high quality college program. Neill and PMS Destination ImagiNation Teams Head to Globals

Hard work and creative problemNeill DI Team solving pay off - just ask the Destination ImagiNation teams from Neill Elementary and Plymouth Middle School.  Both teams were named the Minnesota State Elementary and Middle School DI champions.  The Pink Ladies of Plymouth, an all girl team, received a perfect score on their instant challenge, and the Neill team, the Ostriches, came up with a very PMS DI teaminnovative solution to their challenge.  Both teams will start fundraising in order to attend the Global Tournament later this spring in Tennessee.

Congratulations to the teams and their coaches, which include Ken Strand, teacher at Neill Elementary who is the coach of the Ostriches, and Heidi Roston from Sonnesyn, who coaches the Pink Ladies with her husband, Todd.  Click here to read more.

District Teacher of the Year and Seven Dreams Education Seven Dreams newFoundation Celebration 

The Seven Dreams Education Foundation invites the community to its annual Grant Awards Celebration and the announcement of the Robbinsdale Area Schools Teacher of the Year on Wednesday,  May 9, 2012.  The reception will begin at 4:30; the program will run from 5:00-6:15 p.m. It will take place in the Robbinsdale Armstrong High School Auditorium, 10635 36th Avenue North in Plymouth.  This will be a wonderful time to celebrate education in the Robbinsdale Area Schools. We hope to see you there!

District's Technology Plan
Approved by MN Dept of Education

On Monday, April 16, members of the district's technology department presented the district's updated three-year technology plan to the School Board.  The plan was developed after several months of work with an eighteen-member task force, and was recently approved by the Minnesota Department of Education.  Key components of the plan include the creation and implementation of online learning systems, the provision for adequate and multi-faceted technology training, increased access for staff and students and increased integration of technology into the teaching and learning practices of the district. SEE Helping District to Save Energy

Schools for Energy Efficiency (SEE) is a comprehensive program to help K-12 schools save energy and money by changing behavior throughout the district.  SEE provides a systemized plan that is FUN for students and is very educational, along with awareness materials, training and utility tracking.  This national award-winning program takes a multi-year approach for lasting effects.  While the goal of the program is for schools and districts to save 10% on their energy use, nearly 600 schools in Minnesota have participated in SEE with an annual energy savings of 13%.  It's great for our district, and great for our future.  Click here to read more.

Spanish Immersion Celebrates 25 Years RSIS 25 Years  

 

Robbinsdale Spanish Immersion School, one of the oldest and most respected language immersion schools in the state, is turning 25 years old.  To celebrate the past, present and future, the school, parents and alumni are planning a week's worth of events including an open house, ice cream social, annual Fiesta Fun Fair celebration, adult alumni reunion as well as a float in the St. Paul Cinco de Mayo Parade.  Click here for all the details and for volunteer opportunities!

Brownie Troop Visits Resource & Welcome Center with Basket of Supplies

 

Troop 14142 from Robbinsdale Spanish Immersion School took a field trip with a purpose.  They were working on their Change a Story Award.  This award helps Brownies realize they have the power to change things for the better for girls in the world.  Troop 14142 decided to collect school supplies for the Resource and Welcome Center (R&WC) and deliver them in person.  They also made welcome signs in different languages which were hung up inside the Center.  "This is the first group of students who have done a collection, brought it in and learned how the supplies are used.  It was very sweet," stated R&WC program coordinator Betty Tapias-Heinrich.

Golden Valley Rotary Gala DinnerGV Rotary

The 2012 Golden Valley Rotary Gala will be held
Fri., May 4, 6 p.m. at the Golden Valley Golf and Country Club.  The event's theme, Songs for Scholarships, reflects the club's strong commitment to funding scholarships to local high school students who are bound for college, and features entertainment by the Twin Cities Women's Choir.  The gala also includes a silent and live auction, raffle and a fine dining experience.
