IT'S FULL THROTTLE OPEN FOR ROBBINSDALE STEAM MAGNET

Olson School
On Monday evening, the Robbinsdale Area School Board unanimously approved the creation of a Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) elementary magnet school to open beginning with the 2012-2013 school year.  This magnet school will be located at Olson Elementary School in Golden Valley and will serve students in kindergarten through grade five.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) is a very rigorous academic framework grounded in research and best practices in critical thinking and inquiry, two skills that are essential for success in the 21st century.  The district added the Arts (A) in STEAM to reflect its deep commitment to and recognition of the arts as a critical component of education.  A parent information night will be Mon., February 13, 2012.  Click here for more information.

Linda FreemanLinda Freeman - Home/School Liaison at Plymouth Middle School

How long with school district: 14 years

What I like best about my job: First, I would have to say working with students and their families is the most rewarding job ever.  It was stated that they learn so much from me.  I have to say I learn even more from them.  Our youth is very important in our community; therefore, we want strong leaders which, I find in every youth who has or will enter my path.  What I like best about my job is that there are hopes and dreams for all our youth and watching them come true is a joy to see.  I also volunteer with Community Mediation Services in New Hope which also serves our school district.

Zachary Lane Elementary Students Bring Reading to Life

Zach Lane Teddy BearsStudents in Kris Haagenson's fourth grade class brought the pages of a story to life recently.  After reading a story called "Kid Reporters at Work in Time for Kids, one of Haagenson's students remarked that it would be cool to make a difference.  They decided to do a project called Blankets and Bears.  The blanket part of the project was to make fleece blankets for kids who needed a blanket. The Bears portion of the project was even bigger.  The students decided to collect teddy bears for the Red Cross to give to children who have lost possessions in fires or natural disasters.  "It makes us feel good, and it's fun, especially when you're the organizers," said fourth grader Jessica Hanley.  "We're excited to get the bears.  We clap when one comes in."   Click here to read more.
