Llamas at Zach LaneA Llama of a Day at Zachary Lane

A lot of llama learning went on at Zachary Lane Elementary School, Thurs., Oct. 6 when Myra, Coco and Tootsie - grandma, mamma and baby llama -came to school! In conjunction with reading the book Llama Llama Red Pajama, students enjoyed meeting and greeting the llamas and learning all about what llamas do.

Thursday's reading of Llama Llama Red Pajama was a national event sponsored by Jumpstart's Read for the Record, a national early education organization that helps children develop language and literacy skills they need for school.

Minnesota Reading Corps (MRC), which focuses on literacy skills for age 3 to grade 3, encouraged their schools to participate in the event by reading the featured book as well as participating in other llama activities. Zachary Lane is one of five MRC schools in the district this year.

The Retail Challenge gives high school seniors a taste of how math is applied in the business world. The Challenges three stages are designed to demonstrate the utility of math and science education and how they work with real-world situations.

Robbinsdale Transition Center (RTC) Students Learn Real Life Skills with Habitat for Humanity

At the end of this project, RTC students will be earning more than a grade.  They'll be earning the thanks of a local family, because not only are the students building life skills, they are building a home in New Hope with Habitat for Humanity.

"This project was a natural fit for students here at RTC to become involved in, for several reasons," explained Wally Kubitschek, RTC's Work Experience Coordinator.  "It's a terrific opportunity to gain firsthand experience of the construction trades, and the students are learning from excellent mentors."
