Cooper Student Attends 3-day Institute on Bullying

Katie Bowden, a student from Robbinsdale Cooper High School, was one of 18 high school students around the state who participated in a three-day institute at William Mitchell College of Law titled "Child Soldiers and Bullying:  Taking a Stand Against Genocide and Hate" from August 16-18, sponsored by the college's Summer Institute for High School Students, and World Without Genocide, a non-profit human rights organization headquartered at William Mitchell.

The institute focused on legal issues, and coaching on how to advocate for victims.  The students gathered at William Mitchell for about twelve hours each day to learn about the parallels of genocide in other countries and bullying in their own communities.  They heard from survivors of the Cambodian and Liberian genocides as well as the Holocaust; they learned from human rights activists and learned leadership skills to implement in their own communities.  On the evening of August 18th, as the final culmination of activities in the institute, the students presented their learning to parents and local government officials, including Mayor Kathi Hemken of New Hope.
