Habitat Happenings, e-newsletter
October 2010
Greetings!
Can you believe October is almost over?  Where did the month go?  Really?  They do say "time flies when you're having fun" and we sure ARE having fun as we continue "building more than a house" with your support!

Our Affiliate continues moving right along with the construction of our houses: the three houses on Sexton Street in New Britain are almost done and the families are being scheduled to do a "walk-through" in the next few days; flooring is being installed at 148 Wilcox Street; the siding is almost finished at 2 West Clay; the last of the sheetrock is being put up at 56 Pliny Street and we are getting ready to lift another roof, this time on 79 Mansfield.

We had two successful collaborations with Macy's "Shop for a Cause" and Chili's "Night Out" thanks to our staff, volunteers and friends who participated to help us raise funds for the Affiliate.

You can read more about these activities below and we hope you enjoy this edition of Habitat Happenings!
Building On Faith Recap

Building on Faith week was a great event as our friends from different faith communities took turns to build on Mansfield Street. We want to thank all of the faith communities who participated during the week of October 12-16.

Also, we couldn't have done it without all the snack and lunch providers who brought in their best to feed our volunteers tummies and souls!  Especially, we'd like to thank the construction team and the Hartford Habitat staff for helping with details, registration, speeches and all the support we needed to make it happen.

Thanks-a-million!
Kudos: Macy's "Shop for a Cause"

Our heart-felt thanks go out to all of the volunteers and donors who contributed to the Affiliate's fundraiser lead by Macy's "Shop For A Cause" in partnership with the Family Services Department.  We raised over $500.00 that will benefit our second Habitat Family Day Picnic scheduled for May 2011.

The following Hartford Habitat homeowners assisted with the fundraiser: Joy Knowlin, Cureene Blake, Jamaira Ocasio and Carol Gord
on. Pictured are Habitat Homeowners Tahisha Turner (L) and LaShawn Smith (R) staffing our booth.

 Saturday mornings workshops are here!
Ever wonder what a little imagination can do for your kitchen or your bathroom, or both!?  Attend one - or all - of these seminars held on Saturday mornings to learn the right techniques to give your home a little face-lift.  While you're learning, you're also helping Hartford Habitat! Get the workshops schedule and find out more about this initiative here.

Without pomp or circumstance, Habitat for Humanity Washington, D.C., marked the end of its weeklong Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project with gentle, unexpected reminders of what this annual event is all about: hope, transformation and generational change.

Ana Valentin-Jackson, a volunteer from Hartford, Connecticut, provided one of the most moving moments as she shared her unusual perspective as a longtime Habitat employee and proud homeowner.  Read more...
We got our "baby-back, baby-back!"
Many, many thanks to all those volunteers, staff and board members who participated in Chili's Night Out for Habitat for Humanity throughout all CT.  Last Wednesday, October 20th, we all enjoyed delicious food from Chili's menu - but the best part was that 10% of our checks went to Habitat for Humanity affiliates throughout CT!

Thanks again, everyone!
Congrats!
Our Hartford Habitat family is very proud of Char Curtiss Corbett who was ordained on Sunday Sept, 26 at South Congregational
First Baptist Church in New Britain.

Char was one of Hartford Habitat's early volunteers and then staff members.
We are very happy and join Char, Jim and their family in the celebration of this milestone!
Make It Count!

If your place of employment has a "Matching Gift" program, your donation can go a greater length! Many companies match their employees' donations either dollar for dollar or fifty cents on the dollar.  So, if you give $20 to Hartford Habitat, it can become $30 or even $40 depending on your company's policy!

Other companies donate when their employees volunteer!

How cool is that?

Help WANTED!
Volunteers are the heart and soul of Hartford Habitat! It is because of our volunteers that we can do our work of building more than a house, revitalizing neighborhoods and empowering families.

We are currently looking for a Faith Relations Volunteer to be the connection between our Affiliate and the faith communities we work with in Greater Hartford.
We are also looking for help with our 2011 Volunteer Appreciation Week Events!

Interested?

Other Collegiate Great Deeds
We are very proud of the collaboration we have with our younger volunteers - the Campus Chapters in our area!

MCC's "Cardboard City"
Cold and wet.  Those are the two words that describe the 2010 Cardboard City event held at Manchester Community College by its Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter on October 6.

The all-nighter event was held to raise awareness about poverty housing in our community and raise funds for the chapter.  Click here to see images of the event.
