Presenting...
Our brand, spankin' new website!
During the last five months, the staff at Hartford Habitat has been working with the team from The Computer Company in Cromwell to develop our new website. After many meetings, the idea was simple: to capture through images and words the meaning behind our "Building More Than a House" tagline. We are so proud of the work both teams have done and for that, we thank everyone involved! We hope you enjoy it and that you will visit frequently to see the progress of the houses under construction, read on family stories and updates. |
Dedications and Groundbreakings! Guilford Street Neighborhood Family and friends gathered at Guilford Street in Hartford to celebrate the dedication of seven new Habitat homes. This was truly a joyous event as families received the keys to their new homes along with bibles and tool-kits. Hartford Habitat has now built 13 homes on Guilford Street, and we will continue to strengthen this neighborhood for years to come. |
House of Abraham II On Sunday, June 27th was the dedication of the second House of Abraham house, which is to be owned and occupied by Lorna Christie and her family. We are truly grateful to all of our volunteers and sponsors in the faith community that have helped make the dream of homeownership a reality for Lorna Christie and her family.
The house of Abraham program is an exciting intiative that brings together Christians, Jews, and Muslims to promote peace building and carry forward Hartford Habitat's vission of "Building More Than a House". Stay tuned for the next House of Abraham project, which is already in the planning stages! |
Breaking Ground at 148 Wilcox Street
Hartford Habitat and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans broke ground at 148 Wilcox Street in New Britain on Saturday May 22. The house will be owned and occupied by the family of Jamaira Ocasio.
This house has been sponsored by the Thrivent Builds Homes program, which is a partnership between Habitat for Humanity International, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, and the Hartford Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. To learn more about Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, click here. |
New Beginnings with a Groundbreaking at 54 Pliny Street
The groundbreaking ceremony for Orette Sterling and his family took place on Thursday, June 17th, at 54 Pliny Street in Hartford.
For the Sterling family, a Habitat home represents the freedom and responsibility of homeownership, additional living space, and a yard for the children. Orette and his family are excited to move into their new home in Hartford, and look forward to working in partnership with Hartford Habitat.
Habitat's 181st home is sponsored in part by Carrier Corporation, and represents the 13th Carrier sponsored house in the Greater Hartford community. Carrier has been a valuable partner both locally and internationally in the Habitat mission to provide safe, decent, affordable housing over the last 16 years. Since 1998, Carrier has donated more than $650,000 to Hartford Habitat, along with dozens of boilers to be used inside the Habitat homes. |

House of Abraham Adult Interfaith Social
On Wednesday, June 2nd, Hartford Habitat held its Adult Interfaith Social where participants and supporters from the House of Abraham house joined in the dialogue for peace and understanding.
The event was held at the Mandell Jewish Community Center in West Hartford and the guests worked in diverse groups on a project that encouraged them to "build foundations for peace" by communicating their thoughts on river rocks. Messages were written in Ethiopian, Arabic, Hebrew, and of course English!
House of Abraham homeowner, Lorna Christie, participated in the event and took home many of the rocks to keep in her house after she has moved in with the family. The remaining rocks remain displayed in our office as a reminder of our organization's mission.

Travelers Championship
Hartford Habitat is proud to have been a part of the Travelers Championship just this past week!
Stanley Black & Decker graciously shared their booth space where donations were collected and people were able to sign 2 x 4's to be put in a Stanley Black & Decker sponsored house at Sexton Place.
Over the course of the week, the Travelers Championship raised over $1.1 million dollars for charity. Thank you to the more than 20 volunteers that joined us at the event to collect donations on behalf of Hartford Habitat. We look forward to participating again next year! |
Not a farewell, but a "we will see you soon"!
We want to take this moment to give a BIG, heartfelt THANK YOU! to our Krista Colletta, who has been our Director of Volunteers, Faith and Youth Programs since 2007. Krista has been very instrumental in our faith communities getting involved in projects like the House of Abraham, the "Clergy Build Day", and the Inter-faith events as well as many other initiatives.
We will certainly miss your cool "zen" style, your friendship and your laughter at the Hartford Habitat office and at the sites. From all of us, Krista --- Good luck! |
