We're Kilbourne Group. We love Downtown Fargo. Why? Where do we begin ...

Its pioneering spirit. Fargo's founding dates back to 1871, when the first settlers staked out homestead claims at the point where the Northern Pacific Railroad would cross the Red River.

Its agricultural ties... and growth. The promise of affordable, fertile Red River Valley farmland helped Fargo's population grow from 600 in 1876 to more than 8,000 in 1892. Fargo's population expanded to 105,549 people between 2000 and 2010, according to the official 2010 Census.

Its tenacious spirit. A fire on Front Street (now Main Avenue) in 1893 consumed most of downtown, reducing 31 blocks to piles of rubble. In less than a year, 246 new buildings were constructed. Designed by a number of fine regional architects, many of these buildings survive today.

Its exciting future. Great things are happening in Downtown Fargo. Hip places to live. Cool places to shop. Interesting places to visit. And that's just the beginning. Downtown Fargo was also recently namd "Best Place to Forget the Recession" and North Dakota has also been recognized as..."Best State in the Country to Live In", "Third Happiest State", "State with the Best Job Growth" ... just a few of the reason's why "North Dakota is Booming".

The Kilbourne Group's vision is to retain and carry forward the history of Fargo through the restoration of historic buildings and the creation of new buildings that honor the past and inspire the future.

A Few Minutes with Outermost Layer

Kilbourne Group recently chatted with Outermost Layer, the 2010 Innovate ND "In the Zone" winner now located at 102 Broadway.

KG: So, what exactly is Outermost Layer?

OL: People often ask what kind of store this is. And the answer is, it's not easy to classify it.  The best way to describe it is probably "urban outdoor lifestyle". Stop in, and you'll understand what we mean! It's not a coat store. We vowed we would fill the store with products that represent the cool stuff that we love the most.

KG: What's unique about Outermost Layer?

OL: The best thing about Outermost Layer is our "small downtown shop" appeal and our ability to offer some of the coolest products around. Because we are small, we can offer unique items that larger shops aren't likely to carry, and we can respond quickly to trends. We are almost giddy about the products we carry.

KG: What do you enjoy most about being located in downtown Fargo?

OL: Where do we begin?! We wouldn't want to have a business anywhere BUT downtown!  Downtown Fargo is flourishing. We love the neighborhood feel, the bustling traffic, and the great variety of stores and restaurants. Most of all, we love the people!  Our tagline is "Wear Yourself Out", and that probably describes it best.  You should be able to express who you are with things you wear and use every day.  We work hard to have the coolest and most unique apparel, footwear and accessories in town. We're always looking for new products, and we love hearing from our customers about what they'd like to see on our shelves.

KG: What are your store hours?

OL: We're open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays. You can find us 24/7 online at our website or on Facebook

KG: Thanks for all the great info! Anything else you want to add?

OL: We are so fortunate to have the Kilbourne Group's support.  Their commitment to the growth of Downtown Fargo is amazing! Because of their involvement in the Innovate ND program, we were able to realize our dream of Outermost Layer sooner than we had hoped!

For the second year in a row, Kilbourne Group is  working with the North Dakota Department of Commerce to sponsor the "In the Zone" award as part of the Innovate ND program. Watch upcoming newsletters for more details!

The Lofts on Roberts...

This historic building is featured in a case study on the National Park Service site for use of a Federal Historic Preservation Tax Incentive project within the state of North Dakota.

The Lofts on Roberts was built in 1917 as the Smith, Follett & Crowl office and warehouse.

Kilbourne Group completed the renovation of The Lofts on Roberts, located at 309 Roberts Street in downtown Fargo, in August 2008. The building houses 21 loft-style apartments on its second through fourth floors. The building has secured entrances and offers easy access to Broadway via the

300 Broadwayatrium.

In May of 2009, Kilbourne Group was recognized by the Fargo-Moorhead Heritage Society, an architectural preservation organization, with an
Adaptive Reuse Award for its efforts in renovating and creating The Lofts on Roberts.
The main floor retains the original historic woodwork, wood stair, and pressed metal ceiling and the apartments display the original exposed structural ceilings and brick walls.
