Innovation Provides Inspiration

"Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower." - Steve Jobs

Many Red River Valley farmers have seeded their fields, and likewise, the seeds of innovation have been planted once again through another successful Innovate ND competition. The Fargo-Moorhead community was fortunate to host the 2010 Innovate ND award ceremony on Monday and Tuesday of this week. The top 20 Innovate ND finalists and the winners from the Innovate ND partner competitions competed for the awards and prize package. Special awards included the People's Choice Award and the In the Zone Award.

Innovate ND is a statewide economic development initiative designed to help entrepreneurs turn business ideas into growing start-ups. It is coordinated by the North Dakota Department of Commerce, the UND Center of Innovation and the NDSU Research and Technology Park.

The In the Zone Award is new to the competition this year and is sponsored by the Kilbourne Group. The future of North Dakota downtown renaissance zones is dependent on successful entrepreneurs. I have deep respect for all the Innovate ND contestants because it takes courage to undertake the risks associated with putting forth new ideas and starting new businesses.

The In the Zone award is aimed at encouraging entrepreneurs with retail-based businesses to pursue their dreams in downtown renaissance zones. Incentives vary from town to town and city to city. The Fargo Renaissance Zone incentives, for example, provide both property tax and income tax incentives to owners who invest in qualified projects. Since the inception of the Fargo Renaissance Zone Plan in 2000, there have been more than 186 active Renaissance Zone projects.

This year's Innovate ND In the Zone winner is Outermost Layer, a store that will carry clothing and accessories for the active, outdoor lifestyle. Outermost Layer will receive 2,000 square feet of prime downtown Fargo retail space at 102 Broadway, valued at $32,000 and compliments of Kilbourne Group, at no lease cost for one year. Congratulations, Outermost Layer, and welcome to the neighborhood!

And congrats, too, to the other Innovate ND winners: Clean Republic, Dean Floyd Toilet Boot, Dog IDs, EMC2, Ridge Rite and ZoneMAP. These companies exemplify words spoken by Theodore Roosevelt decades ago: Believe you can and you're halfway there. The visionary entrepreneurs behind the Innovate ND companies are to be commended for their innovation and pioneering spirit. Check them out and do what you can to support them; their success is North Dakota's future.

Enjoy the journey,
Doug Burgum
Founder and Chairman, Kilbourne Group

Any ideas on when the Fargo Theatre was built?

Construction began on September 15, 1925. Located at 314 Broadway, formerly the site of a fruit store known as the Idlekope Building, the theatre took six months for completion. In the 1980s, it was restored to its original glory. It is the area's only remaining vintage movie palace with a vaudeville stage. The theatre serves as a multipurpose facility with capacity for film showings, live productions and meetings, and is a registered historic landmark. It features a restored theatre pipe organ, the "Mighty Wurlitzer".

The
Fargo Theatre Off Broadway is a 76-seat "baby" theatre that hosts first-run theatrical release films, specialty film series, corporate meetings, academic lectures, private parties and private rental events. The Fargo Theatre Off Broadway is part of the 300 Broadway multi-use urban infill project.
