Friends:
Summer is here!  It's hot and humid, but it's still a great time to get out and enjoy your refuges.  Just be sure to take your sun block, water, and favorite insect repellant  (Check out what the CDC has to say about keeping those pests away).    Dawn and dusk are good times for wildlife viewing and keeping cooler.

New Observation area at Savannah NWR Visitor Center

pergola
The pergola crew
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Local Boy Scout Billy York, age 15, recently completed a pergola for his Eagle Scout Leadership project. The pergola is a wonderful addition to the Savannah Coastal Refuges Complex visitor center. It overlooks the bird feeding station and affords visitors shaded seating to better enjoy the outdoors.

Billy is a member of Richmond Hill Boy Scout Troop 486. In order to become an Eagle Scout, Billy needed to develop and complete an approved project.  Assisted by his parents, Scout Leader Max Coles, troop members, members of the Friends group, and the Youth Conservation Corps crew, the project took over 400 hours to complete. Funds for this project were donated by the Friends group,  local business, and Billy's fundraising efforts.

The pergola provides shaded seating on on a paved platform just yards from the bird feeding station which sits just outside the Visitor Center's doors.  The irrigation system for the birds feeding station was another eagle scout project for Refuge Ranger Peter Range's son.

Laurel Hill Wildlife Drive to Reopen?

closed sign

We've all come to hate the fences and "Closed" signs on our favorite wildlife drive.  Those fences and signs should be coming down soon, although the exact date has still not been announced.   Because of the uncertainty of the date, the reopening  celebration has been postponed until the fall when all of the construction has been completed, north and south of SC-170.  It will hopefully coincide with Refuge Week (October 9-15).

Details will be published as they are available, expect to get an email when the date is set.

Conserving the Future: Wildlife Refuges and the Next Generation

A National Conference
nwra logofws logo
Fish & Wildlife staff and Friends group representative Sharon Lindsay are attending a national conference in Madison, WI, this week dedicated to developing a new Vision for the National Wildlife Refuge System.  A Vision Statement has been developed over the past year that will serve as the working document for the conference  (Read the Draft HERE).  The conference and the process are co-sponsored by the US Fish & Wildlife Service and the

National Wildlife Refuge Association.

Check out more about the conference HERE.

Conference organizers have promised an extensive "virtual" experience for those not attending the conference in person.  Check out the site for details.

Some New Faces:

You may have seen some fresh new faces around the refuge complex recently.  We have been fortunate to get students funded through two Federal programs to assist the staff and volunteers.

Zac Gohsman is a STEP (Student Temporary Employment Program) intern for the visitors services program at the Savannah Coastal Refuge Complex visitors center.  He earned a bachelor's degree in Health Sciences from Armstrong Atlantic State University in May 2009 and is currently working on a second bachelor's degree, in molecular biology, while pursuing admission into medical school.  He assists the visitors services staff with the daily operations of the visitors center which include:  developing various information databases, researching purchases, distributing information to the public, assisting with environmental educational programs and the operation of The Gator Hole.

He also assists the refuge biologist with invasive species eradication programs.  He aspires to one day become a practicing physician, specializing in pediatric endocrinology.
