E-Mail Blast

Welcome to the new format for the e-mail blast.  I have been having problems getting Comcast to send out my mass e-mailing, so I'm trying Constant Contact again.  I hope this gets to everyone.

Harbor Deepening Report Released:

The US Army Corps of Engineers has released their long-awaited draft report on deepening the Savannah Harbor.  In the report the Corps suggests deepening the harbor to 47 feet and also lays out plans supported by Georgia DOT and Georgia Ports to dig down an additional foot to accommodate the next generation of large container ships.  Local F&WS staff are currently studying the document (which weighs 30 pounds).  Public comments will be taken for at least 45 days from Nov 26th, and a public hearing will be held on December 15th in Savannah.  Check put the plan HERE and the Savannah Morning news article HERE.

The Harbor deepening will have significant impact on the Savannah NWR and its fresh water marshes.  Friends should plan to attend the public comment meeting.  More info will follow.

Welcome RV Campers?

The Savannah NWR now has our first-ever RV campers.  Arnie and Elly Weisbrot parked their RV an Pad 1 this past week and will soon be ready to begin their volunteer activities.  The Weisbrots retired in 2004 and have traveled extensively since.

In 2008, they began RV volunteering, and have since served at several different locations throughout N. America including Bosque del Apache and Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuges. Their activities at these refuges included working visitor centers, conducting interpretive and historical tours, and compiling a bird checklist; Arnie even conducted an engineering study of the refuge's telephone system replacement options. Their ,most recent location was at Ft Pulaski National Monument.  They plan to stay on at Savannah NWR through the end of December.
