E-Mail Blast
Welcome to the new format for the e-mail blast. I have been having problems getting Comcast to send out my mass e-mailing, so I'm trying Constant Contact again. I hope this gets to everyone.

Friends Group Field Trip:
Our first annual Field Trip and cook-out was held at Harris Neck NWR on Friday, October 15. More than 50 Friends attended and were treated to a sunset hayride that stopped at Woody Pond just as hundreds of storks and egrets were flying in for the night. Then we went back to the refuge HQ for a meal and conversation around the camp fire.
A great time was had by all! Many thanks to all the Friends group members and the FWS staff who made this event possible.

Harris Neck Open House:
On Saturday the 16th, Friends group volunteers and FWS staff lead tours and gave presentations to the public about the refuge, its history, and its importance in the preservation of wildlife and wildlife habitat. As usual, Dave Chafin's live reptile presentation was a big hit with the public.

Pinckney Island activities:
Hayrides, bike tours, and kayak trips guided by Water-dog Outfitters once again highlighted Refuge Week activities at Pinckney. Volunteers also set up an information table for participants highlighting the role of volunteers and the Friends group. Thanks to David and Lisa Fleming who each year contribute a portion of their Refuge Week activities to the Friends group.
We now have a donation box at Pinckney which is already bringing in funds.

Friends group loses a dedicated volunteer:
The morning of the Field Trip we were saddened to learn of the untimely death of Leon Tomlinson at age 66. Leon was a Friends group member , a regular volunteer at the Savannah NWR Visitor Center, and an avid kayaker. He was known and respected by many FWS volunteers and staff, and he will be missed. Check out his obituary HERE. His family has asked that any memorial contributions be made in Leon's name to one of his favorite environmental organizations (listed in the obituary).
