Friends of the Savannah Coastal Wildlife Refuges Announces:
Savannah NWR Visitor Center Opening Festivities

The long-anticipated Savannah National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center and Nature Store will open to the public on Monday, March 8, 2010. This will mark the culmination of many years of effort and planning by the US Fish & Wildlife Service (F&WS) staff and volunteers, and should provide a focus for environmental education activities in the low-country of Georgia and South Carolina for many years to come.
The public opening will be preceded by an invitation-only Grand Opening and Ribbon-Cutting on Saturday, March 6th. This will be an all-day event with refreshments, speakers, exhibits, video presentations, nature tours, and an opportunity to visit the exhibit hall and our nature store, The Gator Hole. Our invited guests will include national F&WS officials, national and state legislators, local dignitaries, and of course, YOU, volunteers and Friends Group members.
So mark your calendars and watch for more updates as the big day approaches. All Friends Group members and F&WS volunteers will be invited, so be sure to get your membership application in soon!

Your Friends group will provide the volunteer staff for the Information Desk and for the "The Gator Hole" at the Visitor Center. Dr. Wasil Khan, a Friends Group Board member and chair of the Visitor Center Committee, is organizing our volunteer base to staff the Visitor Center. He is looking for volunteers for two areas of involvement:
1. Information Desk - this involves staffing the front desk and taking questions from the public, giving directions, passing out brochures, etc.
2. "The Gator Hole" - this involves staffing the cash register and other duties typical of a retail sales outlet. We also are seeking volunteers with retail experience to help with ordering, inventory, record keeping, etc.
Your Friends group will work with the F&WS to provide vetting and training for potential volunteers.
If you are interested, or know someone who is, please contact us at webmaster@coastalrefuges.org.
