Greetings!
This September we celebrate the life and work of Lanny Lasky with a large scale retrospective in both galleries. Lasky (April 9 1927- May 7 2011) was a well-known sculptor, painter and collagist. She was also a beloved colleague and teacher whose common sense and deep humanity were prized by all at Upstream. The gallery is very pleased to honor her with a major review of her work.
This month we also mourn the loss of another dear colleague, June Otani. June died August 26th after a long, courageous and graceful battle with a rare neurological disease. We will all miss her immensely.
Please join us on Sunday, September 16th from 2-5 pm for the opening reception of Lanny Lasky: Memorial Retrospective.

Lanny Lasky, Black & White, Assemblage
|
Lasky was born Lorraine Lanouette in Oakland California and trained as a painter at LA City College, University of Vermont and Goddard College. Over time, she became impatient with the two dimensionality of canvas, pushing the edge of sculpture and collage by attaching objects to it or penetrating it. She ultimately abandoned canvas altogether. Her later work was almost entirely sculptural, using myriad found objects out of context to create self-contained, witty assemblages. Her work is characterized by a strong sense of a perfectly reasonable "parallel universe" and great vigor. Despite an often muted palette, her work glows with intense, subtle resonances among hues. Her collages and assemblages have been displayed at 40 museums and galleries throughout the U.S.

Great Expectations, Acrylic, Mixed Media June Otani in December 2010
|
June Otani was born on July 7th, 1934 in California. She and her family were interned in a relocation camp for Japanese Americans from May 1942 to Nov. 1945 in Gila River, Arizona. Great Expectations, left, is a remembrance of her mother's apron and Identification papers during that period. June's work was often intensely personal, yet always accessible. She had an explosive sense of color, which she used with elegance and formal energy.
June studied at the Art Center college of Design, where she earned a BFA with honors. She later studied at The Art Students League, Pratt and SVA. She had a very successful career as an illustrator, winning many awards. Her illustrations graced over twenty children's books, including her favorites, Chibi, A True Story from Japan, Little Dog Poems and Little Dog and Duncan. (Clarion Publishers) Later on, she focused on wood sculptures, oil painting, printmaking and mixed media. Her work was exhibited in 29 shows ranging from the National Association of Women Artists, Pratt Graphic Gallery, Silvermine Guild and the Hudson River Museum. In 2000, she exhibited at the Circolo Artistico Gallery in Bologna Italy.

Journey of Faith
 | | Luis Perlman, Double Organ Pipes |
Gallery Member Luis Perlman is participating in this provocative group show at Concordia College Osilas Gallery, September 14th through October 14th. The show explores the relationships between religion and art. The Bronxville Reformed Church, Christ Church, Saint Joseph's Church, and Village Lutheran Church have collaborated with OSilas Gallery to create a community dialogue that explores the concept of faith and visual art. As part of the Journey of Faith, these four congregations have opened their doors and invited participating artists to reflect and be inspired by the art and architecture found within the worship space. Artists have created an original work of art in response to their experience. Members of the community are invited to join in the dialog of Journey of Faith by reflecting on these finished works of art. For more information, click here
