We're kicking off the New Year with our annual Small Works Show-- a wide-ranging selection of work in all media.  You'll see new work from old friends and enjoy new pieces by emerging artists in New York and Westchester.

Please join us for the opening reception (and celebration) on Sunday, January 8th from 2-5 pm.

Small Works 2010

New Artists on the Upstream Roster

All of us here at Upstream are pleased to welcome three new artists for 2012: Maralyn Matlick,(Painter) Susan Richman (Photographer) and Daniel van Benthuysen (Painter). Each offers a special perspective, a high degree of professionalism and we are honored to have them "in the family".

This month Matlick, Richman and van Benthuysen help us kick off a new section featuring the work of our artists.
Maralyn Matlick

Maralyn Matlick works mainly in pastel, watercolor and ink.  Her work is a continually evolving exploration of line, value, color and shape.  Matlick's inspirations are the Hudson River Valley, where she lives and Maine where she paints during the summer.

In the current Palette Magazine, William B. Lawrence says of her Pemaquid Loop series: " the paintings feel rich and honest.... it is the layers of feeling that keep the artist involved..."  and the observer as well, we might add.

Susan Richman

Richman joins Upstream after an early career as a commercial photographer in NYC. Speaking of her most recent work, she says: "fundamentally my images are about form and revealing the visual eloquence I see in all things. I'm interested in emotive color and using abstract shapes to find balance between objects."

Daniel van Benthuysen

Van Benthuysen was trained at Tulane, Parsons and the Art Students' League.  He has exhibited widely all over the country.  Currently he teaches media and design at Hofstra University.

His work can be at once representational and ironic, with a wonderful sense of mid-century line and color.

Of his own work, Dan says very little, not being a great believer in artists' statements.  However, you can visit him and more of his work here:

Upstream Gallery was started in 1991 by a group of Westchester artists who were looking for a venue to show their work outside of traditional commercial galleries.

The gallery has two street level exhibition spaces.  The current artist members work in a variety of media including painting, sculpture, collage / assemblage, print-making and photography.  Styles range from the representational to the abstract.  Members have shown in a wide variety of exhibitions throughout the United States and Europe. Upstream encourages artists to submit their work for review.  Submissions are reviewed on a monthly basis.
