Greetings!

It's been a busy fall for TIDES! We attended RAND Corporation's 3rd Annual African First Ladies initiative, hosted two TIDES technology demonstrations, and we participated in the 2nd Pentagon Energy Security Event (PESE). In addition to this, TIDES also launched a new website. Please check out the new site and let us know what you think!

2011 STAR-TIDES Demo
Last month, TIDES hosted its 5th annual fall field demonstration at Fort Lesley J. McNair (4-7 Oct) and at the Pentagon (11-13 Oct).  Both demos were a huge success!  For the Fort McNair demo, nearly 700 visitors registered to attend the week long event and we had over 40 exhibitors. This year we had a lot of shelter solutions on display, ranging from long-term energy efficient housing to short-term solutions such as weatherized tents. Some of the highlights from the demo included a video teleconference with environmentalist John Francis, from the University of Wisconsin and a 3D printing display by researchers from Virginia Tech University.  We also exhibited at the 2nd Annual Pentagon Energy Security Event which promotes current and emerging energy security initiatives DoD-wide.

Be sure to mark your calendars for the 6th annual STAR-TIDES fall field demo which will take place October 2-5 2012 at Fort Lesley J. McNair.

African First Ladies Initiative (AFLI)

In September, TIDES Africa Research Analyst, Nelly Mobula, attended The RAND Corporation's

3rd Annual African First Ladies Initiative at the Ford Foundation Headquarters in New York.  The initiative supports African First Ladies efforts to become champions of change on issues related to Millennium Development Goals. TIDES has been working with the First Ladies to promote sustainable solutions in Africa. The event was attended by successful African Women business leaders from the African Women Entrepreneur Program (AWEP) and First Ladies from Africa and the Carribbean.  Other attendees included Rosalynn Carter and Charie Blair, wife of former UK prime minister Tony Blair in support of Secretary Clinton's approach to building stronger communities and sustainable economies across the globe.
