Elaine Gaines was the epitome of strength. She was never dissuaded from pursuing her passions. Primary to those passions was her love of painting. Where some may have seen a struggle, Elaine saw a possibility. These possibilities led her to create an impressive body of colorful, abstract paintings. Each piece combined different colors and textures, inviting viewers to find their own meaning within these beautiful new worlds. She found an artistic voice that set her soul free from the limitations of her circumstances. Elaine sold numerous paintings throughout her life and enjoyed exhibiting throughout the state of Ohio. Born in Hamilton County on November 15, 1932, Elaine was institutionalized at an early age, first at the Gallipolis Developmental Center and later at Orient in Columbus, Ohio. She was born at a time when people saw differences before they saw humanity. Society did not know what life for a little black girl with cerebral palsy could be, let alone what it should be. After institutions closed she transitioned to Park West Court Apartments where she experienced unprecedented attention and freedom. It was during this time, already well past middle-age, that she was first introduced to painting. She was an important member of the UCP Art Bridge program and worked closely with teaching artist Cody Miller. She joined the Open Door Art Studio community at its inception in 2007. Her years of hard work, impressive body of artwork and sweet disposition earned her much respect within the studio. As Elaine's health declined in 2011 and 2012, she never lost her desire to paint. Even when the grip in her hands refused to hold a paintbrush, she persevered and found new ways to create her beloved paintings. When even saying "yes" or "no" seemed taxing, she would still smile at the prospect of creating something new. Her passion for creating art and connecting with people always burned brightly in her eyes. Elaine passed away on September 18, 2012. She is survived by a brother who lives in Chicago. She is also survived by a community of friends, admirers and fellow artists who now know that strength is not found in the muscles of the mighty, but in the hearts of determined individuals like Elaine. This brave woman never faltered in her mission to create beauty in an imperfect world. She will be greatly missed. | Sunset Matrimony |
