Message from the BoardPilgrims Needed for Men's Walk #239
I am continually amazed that the God of the Universe would chose to use you and me to spread this word. The creator of everything wants to use us. We only have to be available. Yesterday, we had a team meeting for Walk #239. What a great team Kelly Wade has put together! God doesn't really need us, but this is where we need to step in, and let God direct us. We need Pilgrims for this Walk. If God has put someone on your heart, the team will be ready.
It has been a great privilege to serve on many Walks since mine in 1999. Matthew 18:20 says, "For where two or three gather in my name, there I am with them." He always shows. We can count on it because He promises. We all know how powerful the Walk to Emmaus is. Think back to the many blessing you received, and pray about who you can share that with. Sponsorship is such a wonderful way to say to someone that you love them.

Message from the Community Spiritual Director
Worship Experience
The French philosopher Rene Descartes once said, "I think therefore I am." That little statement has often reduced the concept of religion to a mental activity. The Christian life cannot be limited to just a thought process. The prophet Isaiah recorded his call to ministry in the first eight verses of chapter six in the book of Isaiah. Reading that passage reveals the use of every one of the human senses. Isaiah saw the Lord high and lifted up. He smelled the smoke as it filled the temple. He felt the shaking of the temple. He heard the angels singing. He tasted the ashes on his lips from the burning coal. In many ways the whole Walk to Emmaus is a multi-sensory experience. We do not bring the Pilgrims together to simply sit and think about the Christian life. We expose the Pilgrims (and ourselves) to the full experience of the Christian life. On the Walk they can see the love of Christ expressed in the lives of the team and in the lights of the candles. They can smell and taste the wonderful food at the agape table. They can hear the testimonies given in each of the talks. They can feel the grace of God in the hugs from all on the Walk. Our God seeks to communicate to us through all of our senses, and we should do no less than open up all of our senses to welcome His Divine Presence into our lives.

Message from the Community Lay Director Eager Anticipation
Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance for what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for.
Hebrews 11: 1-2
It was almost too late when I heard them. On Memorial Day I was mowing my grass (while thinking of the reasons for the day, no doubt) when over the loudness of the lawnmower, I heard the sound - the unmistakable roar of jet exhaust. I looked up and four F-16s screamed overhead in formation and turned south. I quickly called to Noah, my 10 year old grandson who was visiting for the day; he was playing with legos in the dining room. By the time he got outside, the jets were gone but we could hear their rumble in the distance. For about five minutes, we expectantly waited in the front yard, hoping for their return from whatever air show they were a part of. Unfortunately that quick glimpse and their distant sound was all we got. At speed, their turning radius approximates the State of Montana and they were flying over someone else's home.
As I reflect on that moment, I pray for that same level of excitement and anticipation for the new Emmaus year, which began June 1st. As I assume the role of Community Lay Director, I eagerly anticipate the opportunity to work with the Board, the Clergy and Lay Leadership, the Community membership and the Pilgrims as God calls them to attend Walks. We have much to celebrate in the work that our outgoing Board members have contributed - Mike Donohoe, Will Dunn, Nancy Higdon, and Kathie Seeley. We also have five new servants assuming Board roles - Dennis Arnold, Ruth Dunn, Kerry Goad, Stephani Huffman, and Carolyn Jestis. Please pray for them as they assume their new roles. I give special thanks to Anna Clemons for her leadership of the Community this past year and her continued presence on the Board.
We as an Emmaus Community have much to be proud of. On the other hand, we have much to do. To name only a few priorities, we will continue to work on Clergy/Church connection and relationships, always remembering that our role is to support the local church and not supplant it. We will continue to fine tune our database and move toward on-line registration. We will closely monitor our funds and try to offset Walk costs to avoid "pricing out" potential Pilgrims. Mostly importantly, we will continue to promote sponsorship and ensuring that it is effective and high quality sponsorship. As we as a community navigate through these and other issues, it is reassuring to remember the words of Theodore Roosevelt: "Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing."
We often say to Pilgrims during a Walk: "Don't anticipate!" In this case I invite you to anticipate, eagerly and joyfully, the new Emmaus year we have to work together, to celebrate our successes, to learn from our missteps and to serve Him through our service to the Pilgrims and each other. As we conduct the Walks and gatherings, we should always be mindful that they are part of the Fourth Day, not the be all and end all. Like the ancients, let us be confident in what we do and have a sense of assurance even when we do not see immediate fruits of our efforts. God has richly blessed us with these opportunities and challenges - let's make the best of them!

Message from the Community Communications Chair
Oh the Places We Will Go...With Christ!
My name is Ruth Dunn. I attended Dallas Women's Walk #178 in April 2004 at Lake Lavon. I sat at the Table of Elizabeth. (clap, clap, clap) I have now introduced myself in the Emmaus fashion! I have recently been elected to the Dallas Emmaus Board. My focus for the next year will be communications. We are all "communicators" in one way or another; so let's continue our spiritual journey together!!
I had heard of the Walk to Emmaus probably 10 years before I actually went on my Walk. I knew it was a retreat and that you had to have a sponsor. My husband, Will ended up going on his Walk to Emmaus before me, so he was my sponsor. The retreat that I thought it would be, well it wasn't! It was an eye-opening, wonder filled, God's Amazing Grace weekend! Have you ever sponsored someone? Since 2004, I have sponsored several people. It's a great gift to give to someone. As it says in Luke 24:32, They asked each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?" Don't you want to share that gift with someone you know? The next Walk for Men #239 is June 21 - 24. There are spots still available for the Walk. Women's Walk #240 is July 19 - 22. And there is still room to sponsor someone. By sponsoring someone, you can continue to share the love of Jesus Christ. I hope you will prayerfully consider sponsorship.
OH the places we will go...With Christ!

TECHNICALLY INCLINED VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
The Dallas Emmaus Community needs a group of technically inclined women and men to serve the Community on a relatively short-term and in some cases, long-term basis.
For the short term, we need volunteers to assist in designing how we want our community database to function and to automate as many functions as possible, to include on-line registration, tuition payments and report generation capacity such as Walk lists, 4th day lists, etc. Individuals with knowledge of and practical experience with database administration software and their applications are particularly sought. The effort will also include the examination of utilization of a vendor and/or purchase of new software. This commitment will last 3 to 6 months, depending upon the frequency of meetings and needed follow-up.

A volunteer or volunteers are also needed to serve for the long term as the Community Database Administrator. Terry Hershberger, who has served us admirably in this role for many years, is stepping down as soon as his replacement is identified and trained. Many thanks to Terry for his work to revitalize the database and keep it up to date. This individual or individuals should be well versed in computer technology and database administration, have a flexible schedule, attention to detail and be self motivated.
If you have an interest in either role (or both) please e-mail Chuck Rohre (communications@dallasemmaus.org), Community Communications Chair, or Anna Clemons (laydirector@dallasemmaus.org), Community Lay Director, to indicate your interest. Contact Chuck on his mobile phone 972.839.0884 for questions. |
You can easily donate money to the Dallas Emmaus Community at any time by clicking here. PayPal is a secured donations system which directly deposits all funds into the Dallas Emmaus Community account. This is a great way to make payment for a pilgrim you are sponsoring or to keep the cost affordable for others who may not otherwise have means to sponsor a friend or loved one. |
