A Message about 4th Day Opportunities

4thDayFor many of us, the Walk to Emmaus was a life-changing experience. You have an opportunity to help someone else have the same experience by serving on a Fourth Day team. The Fourth Day team is responsible for all of the little "behind the scene" things necessary to make the weekend for the Pilgrims flow as smoothly as possible to make their experience as spiritually meaningful as possible. Tasks for the team on the week of the Walk include Set-up on Wednesday night, Send-off on Thursday night, Candlelight on Saturday night, and closing on Sunday afternoon.

I encourage you to pray about seeing if you can say yes to God's call to serve as a Fourth Day member for one or more of the remaining Walks this year in October or November.

If you have an interest in serving, or merely need some questions answered before deciding, please visit the Dallas Emmaus Community Website to contact one of the Walk's Fourth Day Directors or use the links provided in the sidebar.

Message from the Community Spiritual Director
Got Jesus?  What Will You Do With Jesus?

"What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ?"

~ Matthew 27:22

During and after our Emmaus experiences, we often find ourselves spending time in conversation with Jesus. Sometimes during these conversations, we often discover that Jesus is the most important and controversial person we have ever spent time with. Because we believe that He Jesus is the only way of salvation and a relationship with God, the mention of His name causes some to have either a violent hatred or radical devotion toward Him. But, no matter how we relate to Jesus, we all must decide what to do with Him. Because He is the Son of God, we cannot ignore Him nor do we have the option of washing our hands of Him as did Pilate. The only options we have are to either accept Him or to reject Him. Because I believe in the eternal life that is promised to those who trust Him, I recommend the acceptance of Christ.

wwydwj

But after we accept Christ, the question still remains, "What will you do with Jesus?" in other words, what will be do with "Jesus" after we have been saved? Many think that we only need faith in order to get to heaven, but I declare today that we also need faith to have life in the here and now. So, I give you four suggestions on what you can do with Jesus after you have received Him.

First we must follow Him. Jesus said in Matthew 10:27, "My sheep listen fo my voice; I know them, and they follow me."

Secondly, we must worship Him. As we grow and learn to love Jesus, it becomes a natural response for us to adore and praise Him with our lips and our lives.

Thirdly, we must share Him. Whenever we discover something good, it becomes a natural desire for us to want that everyone we know and come in contact with to experience this wonderful Savior.

Finally, we must watch for His return. It gives me great joy to be able to dream of the day that I may see Jesus face to face Jesus and be able to spend time with Him in eternity.

So the question remains. What will you do with Jesus? All considering, we as Christians should all look for every opportunity to obey Him, worship Him, and share the good news with others

Message from the Community Board

A Seed... Yet To Be Planted

It was half hidden in the weeds and cactus just outside the gate. The ancient plow and planter had been unhooked from the tractor for the last time about 70 years ago. New technology was to take its place. Its identity was altered. In a moment it was reclassified from useful to antique.

The gate leads into a life giving oat patch of about 25 acres just outside the small community of Utopia, deep in the Hill Country of Texas. This freshly plowed field in the middle of our ranch provides sustenance in the winter for the animals of the hills. In essence these oats, that defy the winter kill, provide life.

On this morning several years back I noticed the relic for the first time. It had been there all along. Something in my Spirit quickened me to pause. Being curious I walked around it attempting to understand its workings...and then it happened. I lifted the lid to the seed bin and what I saw struck deep... all the way to the marrow of my soul. The bin was about half full of seed... seed meant to be planted 70 years ago.

At my normal pace of life I would have missed this... the message. But on this morning I was in Utopia and time was suspended and I prayed and I listened. "There is seed in your bin," the voice whispered, "...yet to be planted."

- Excerpt from Life's Sacred Journey: Seven Lessons

Learned from Utopia by David L. Cook, Ph.D.

Sponsors...we've all had one and some of us have been one. Sponsorship is the key to the success of the Emmaus movement. It is God who calls the pilgrim to a Weekend, but sometimes He asks us to dial the phone, or in the story above, plant the seed.

treeSponsorship is an act of love for God, for the participants in the Walk to Emmaus, for the Emmaus Community, and for the church. You can demonstrate God's love with someone you know by sponsoring him or her during an Emmaus weekend.

In the book Sponsorship, Richard and Janine Gilmore tell us that "Wise sponsorship is careful, intentional, prayerful, and purposeful because it results from God's leading. The pilgrims return to their churches and community renewed in their commitment to be effective disciples."

There are 3 Dallas Emmaus Walks remaining this year and all have spots open for more pilgrims. Have you looked in your church's grain bin lately? You might be surprised to find some seed that God intended to be planted years ago, but no one ever took the time to plant.

Message from the Community Communications Chair
Unanticipated Learnings

On Saturday, August 20th, I attended the Chrysalis Restart meeting at First United Methodist Church in Richardson. My expectation was to learn about Chrysalis and what can make it work for our community again. I did learn about that and had a great table discussion with the table I sat with, eloquently named "Five Guys for God." As in a Chrysalis flight, each brainstorming table selected its own name. One of the mysteries for the ages is why one table, with nine participants, named themselves "The Table of Three." I thought the most creative was the table adjacent to ours, "The Table of Contents."

Although the meeting was ostensibly about Chrysalis, there was quite a bit of discussion both in the Board session Saturday morning and the all hands meeting Saturday afternoon about Emmaus in general, to include Kairos and Chrysalis. The three important "takeaways" from my standpoint related to sponsorship, direction and purpose, and commitment.

1

One of the presenters, who leads Emmaus and Chrysalis for the Upper Room in Nashville, made the observation that in 23 years of active involvement in Emmaus he has only sponsored 9 people. When he explained that, it made perfect sense. In his mind, you don't sponsor someone, then send them off to a reunion group and hope they get involved. He believes in an active, totally involved relationship with your Pilgrim, which implies being selective, intentional and committed in sponsorship. It also implies lovingly declining to sponsor when you cannot be that.

2

A second insight was that successful Emmaus communities are focused on the Fourth Day, the total walk with Christ of the individual and collective members of the community, as opposed to being event-driven. What profit is there is we put on great Walks or Flights and the pilgrims do not progress in their faith and do not have a faith-based community to support them in their Fourth Day? We should ask are we walking the walk of faith and discipleship, not merely doing the talk. Each of us as individual members of the community, as accountability groups and as the Dallas Emmaus Community are called to piety, study and action.

3

The third important insight relates to accountability. Both of our presenters, the national and the regional directors, stated unequivocally that if you are not involved in an accountability group, you have no business serving on a conference room team or being in an Emmaus leadership position. Keep in mind they were using a broad definition of the phrase "accountability group" meaning a group reunion, a bible study or others forms that keep you accountable and involved in piety, study and action. Personally, the Cornerstone Disciples, the group reunion I have met with for the past 6 years, is one of the most important relationships in my life and I thank God daily for those brothers and their support.

To summarize, on that Saturday 80 or so members of the Dallas Emmaus Community came together to initiate the restart of Chrysalis and, as importantly, were given important food for thought to advance the community and to serve Him more effectively in our Fourth Day.

Message from the Community Lay Director

The Emmaus Mission: To become the hands and feet of Christ...

JesusServes

...with the vision of Fourth Day Leaders embodying Christ. Last month the board and I attended the Dallas Chrysalis Restart meeting lead by the Upper Room representatives, Pat Miller and Greg Engroff. In this meeting they covered servant leadership, Sponsorship, 4th Day, and the Emmaus and Chrysalis Model. One of the points that came up was being "just a 3 day community," versus a 4th Day Community.

Becoming a 4th Day Community, is one that presents our Emmaus ministry to people as A Walk to Emmaus. It is inviting someone to a walk. It is being ready to explain what Emmaus is, what it has meant to you and your family, and determining (with the potential pilgrim) the Walk that is convenient for them. Letting men and women of your church or social circle see you are a servant because that is what Jesus has called you to be.

Being a 4th Day Community means that we are always look for ways to honor our Lord. That we purposely look for opportunities to serve and help others. When we are open to seeing others through the eyes of Christ, we will know who God is calling us to serve. Through our Community we have ways such as 4th Day team service, acts of agape (food and items) and active (and regular) reunion/accountability groups.

While these are vital aspects to being a 4th Day Community and without these the Dallas Emmaus Community could fail to exist, it is important to remember what we learned on our own walk (and it bears repeating), the 4th Day is all the days of your life following your 3 day walk. Being a 4th Day Community, therefore, also means that we show our Christian love in all situations so that others can see the love of Christ through us. On a traffic filled highway, in line at a convenience store with a slow cashier, in a parking lot that someone cuts us off for the parking space. We can not just be "Sunday Christians" or "3-Day Christians", we must be DAILY Christians.
