Message from the Community Lay Director
Make a Difference
"I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message. I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one--as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me. (John 17:20,21) NLT.
Knowing that Jesus prayed for us over 2,000 years ago should inspire each of us to renew our commitments to the ministries God has called us to be a part of to further his kingdom. Emmaus is one place you can make a difference in the world to further God's kingdom. To make a difference requires commitment and I ask each member of the Dallas Emmaus Community to renew your commitment to be active in our community. Our fall walks are fast approaching and this is a time we can come together in unity to pray for the Pilgrims and the Teams. We can be a part of the 72 hour prayer vigil or Sponsor someone that God has called to be on one of these walks. We can commit to being a part of what God is doing by scheduling our time so we can participate in send off, serving, candlelight, closing, gatherings and the Chrysalis Restart. Your participation and support is needed so we as a community can be all God has called us to be.

Message from the Community Board
Dawn of the Butterfly
We are at a new crossroads in our Community. We have the opportunity to help create growth and nurture our youth so they will become the leaders of our churches tomorrow. We need to get the community involved in the Restart of the Chrysalis program in the Dallas Emmaus organization. The Nashville leadership of Emmaus requires that we show our spirit and gift of Grace we received on our Walks. Now it is our time to be leaders, we are being called to share the Love of Christ and support this Restart. I hope that with prayerful consideration you will endeavor to be part of the excitement in our Joy of service.

Return of the Butterfly
People were bringing little children to Jesus to have him touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw, this he was upset. He said to them, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it"
Mark 10:13-16 After my Emmaus Walk experience, I was given the opportunity to serve on a college age Chrysalis Journey. It was my first youth retreat experience. I remember very clearly trying to sleep on the rough concrete floors at FUMC Frisco the last night of a two day team meeting, and I most certainly remember the wooden bunk bed at the retreat center. I also remember falling asleep during one of the talks because I did not sleep at all on that bed. But, I soon recovered from that after the Candlelight worship experience. Those young people were so filled with the love of God that night, it moved me to tears. As God's presence filled the chapel, I could actually feel God tugging on the heart of those young people as they were being pulled closer to God.
Chrysalis is a valuable ministry that exposes our young people to prayer, faith, love, and hope and it would be a mistake for the Dallas Emmaus Community to pass up the opportunity to invest in the spiritual future of our youth. When you decide to support the Chrysalis ministries, you are making an investment eternally in the lives of these young people Jesus commanded us allow to come to Him. As a pastor, who has sent several youth to the Chrysalis Weekend, I have observed the high spiritual return on my investment. I have seen this return in the areas of: their spiritual understanding, their faith commitment, their maturity, their leadership skills and their vocational callings.
Chrysalis is a vital ministry for helping our children develop into spiritually mature young adults. As the transformation of a butterfly requires that it changes from an egg to a caterpillar, and from a caterpillar to a chrysalis, and from a chrysalis to a butterfly, so is our teenagers need for change in every aspect of their development: physical, emotional, psychological relational, social, and spiritual. If during this time of development they could experience the amazing love God has for them; if they could see how God has so beautifully designed them, if they could understand the strength of God that sustains them in their weakness and if they could feel the power of the Holy Spirit that empowers their lives, I believe their lives would be incredibly transformed.
Unfortunately, Chrysalis is temporally on a hiatus. Two young children were talking to each other about parent problems one day. One of them complained to the other saying, "First they teach you to talk, then they teach you to walk, and as soon as you learn how to do both, they tell you to sit down and be quiet." Let's not do this to our youth. Let's save the butterfly. There are new eggs being born every day that will soon become caterpillars. Let's give the caterpillars a chance to become crystallized by teaching them to walk the walk and talk the talk again. Let's give them a chance to become butterflies. Let's allow these butterflies the opportunity to share their walk and experiencing by giving talks on Chrysalis flights and journeys.
By the grace of God, we have been given a second chance to spiritually invest in the lives of our youth. On Sat Aug 20, 2011 at 1PM there will be a Chrysalis Restart meeting held at FUMC-Richardson. In order to revive this most vital ministry, "we will need a minimum of 75 people at this Saturday meeting. This is a call to action for all of us in the Dallas Emmaus Community." Let's show up on August 20th and invest in the spiritual lives of our youth. Jesus says, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them." We hinder them when we do not provide for them healthy, effective means of continual spiritual growth.

Top Ten Reasons : You should attend the Chrysalis Restart Meeting:
10. It is on a Saturday and you might get to avoid some chores
9. The DEC Board promised the Upper Room that a minimum of 75 would attend and there are only 12 of us
8. Youth can be pretty yucky but God loves them and want us to be good to them
7. At Walks, the camp sites feed the pilgrims, but at Chrysalis, you have the opportunity to "cook for Jesus"
6. It is always a hoot to see what table names they will come up with
5. It is an opportunity to connect with young people before they get old and cynical like us
4. You might not know a thing about Chrysalis and the session is a great opportunity to learn more
3. We are stewards, under the direction of the Upper Room, of several magnificent programs, including Chrysalis. It has worked in the past and we have the chance to make it work well again.
2. There will be food!
1. Saturday, August 20th, is a great opportunity to meet new friends, gather for a purpose and work hard to advance the Kingdom. Be there!
With apologies to David Letterman,

The Rest of the Story
One of my favorite radio programs was "The Rest of the Story" in which the late Paul Harvey would tell little tidbits about some person you thought you had an inkling you knew and at the end, he would reveal the subject, often to the listener's surprise. He would then close, in his lilting voice, telling you that you "now know the rest of the story."
Do we have the same relationship with our "Purple Worship Book?" Its official title is Worship Booklet for Pilgrims, Third Edition, published by the Upper Room. The Dallas Emmaus Community began using the Third Edition in 2008 during Walk 216. If you still have the older version, which is substantially different, I encourage you to attend a Candlelight, go to the table in the back of the room and pony up the 3 dollars for a new one. During an Emmaus Walk the Purple Book is extensively used and several sections are covered, including to everyone's delight, all 400 verses of the ever-popular song "De Colores" and the Blessings Before and After the Meals on page 40. After the Walk, though, most of us only pay attention to a few sections, notably the Holy Communion Liturgy on pages 26-34 read during each Candlelight and perhaps, the Prayer to the Holy Spirit and the Prayer of Thanksgiving on Page 48, if you don't read them from your Service Sheet (What we commonly call our "reunion group card"). If that is the case, you are missing some great material that might be valuable as a resource and devotional support. Have you ever noticed the Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi? The list of scriptural passages on prayer on page 7? Wesley's Grace? Have you read the Examination of Conscience since your Walk? Powerful stuff! Do you know what Lectio Divina is? Do you need a guide for study or for Christian action? Would you like to find the words to the "Jesus, Jesus" song sung at Candlelights? Are you familiar with the acronym ACTS? Did you lose your Service Sheet? No worries, it is duplicated in the Purple Book. The Purple Worship guide can be a source of spiritual nourishment, a guide to Christian study and development, or just something you pull out of your book bag for Candlelight. The choice is yours. I encourage you to at least look at the other pages beyond 26-34 as beautiful and meaningful as they are. Then, as Paul Harvey would say, you will know the rest of the story of the Purple Worship guide. De Colores, Chuck Rohre Community Communications Chair Walk #186 Table of Paul
