Men's Walk #232
June 23rd - 26th Camp Copass
The Community is invited to attend: Send-off which starts at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Candlelight begins at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday. Closing will start around 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. Please be careful not to arrive earlier than 7:15 p.m. for the Candlelight services on Saturday.
There are spots still available for this weekend. Let's keep the Pilgrims (both those whose names we know, and those whose names we do not), their Sponsors, Team members and all of their families lifted in prayer as each prepare for the weekend. Applications are online.
Also available on the DEC website is the online Prayer Vigil which supplements (but does not replace) the paper Prayer Vigil passed around at Candlelights and other DEC events for signature. Both Prayer Vigils are posted during Walks for Pilgrims to see who has been praying for them.
Women's Walk #233 will be July 21st - 24th at Camp Copass.

Message from the Community Lay Director
Forward Focus
As your new Community Lay Director I would like to take a moment to introduce myself to you. I attended Dallas Emmaus Women's Walk #96 at Lake Sharon, October of 1997 and sat at the Table of Ruth. Since my Walk I have been blessed to work in many different areas of service on Emmaus Walks. Through the years I have also been blessed by everything that Emmaus has to offer including many lasting friendships that I deeply cherish.
I would like to ask you to join with me, as together we lead the Dallas Emmaus Community into the year ahead. This year we will be working on restarting Chrysalis, having our summer walks at the new Camp Copass Tally Retreat Facility and making preparations for the Dallas Emmaus 25th Anniversary in 2012. Opportunity abounds to strengthen God's Kingdom through our local church leadership, sponsorship of new Pilgrims and Candidates, participation in Reunion Groups, Committees, Gatherings, and team service for Walks.
One area I'll want us to focus on over the year ahead is strengthening Sponsorship. Wise sponsorship begins with prayerful discernment regarding potential Pilgrims and their readiness to attend a Walk. I will encourage each of us to be sensitive and open to the promptings of the Holy Spirit about who should (or perhaps should not) attend a particular Walk. And I ask that each of us who chooses to sponsor a Pilgrim be committed to fulfilling the expectations of a Sponsor : transportation of Pilgrims to and from the Walk, prayer for the Pilgrim and support for their family during the Walk and follow-up after the Walk. In particular, as Sponsors we should ourselves be modeling regular attendance at a Reunion Group or an accountability group, and actively encouraging our Pilgrims to join a Reunion Group/Accountability Group themselves after their Walk is completed.
So please join me in prayer, for the community as a whole, and for discernment and wisdom in decisions made by the Emmaus Board in the year to come. May we all serve to combine our gifts and talents to the glory of God, and grow closer to Christ and each other in the process.
De Colores,
Anna Clemons

Message from the Community Spiritual Director
Eat, Pray, Love
Oh how I wish I were a creative writer! I envy those people who seem to pump out books every few months, or those who write brilliant articles weekly, and yes, even those who write daily devotionals. How do they have that much to say? Needless to say, that is not a gift of mine. So as I sat here at my desk trying to decide what in the world to write about, I noticed a book on my shelf that I had read last summer. Many of you have either read this book, heard about it, or seen the movie. The book is titled "Eat, Pray, Love" by Elizabeth Gilbert, and as I thought about that title I was reminded how this could be a title for a Walk to Emmaus weekend.
As the pilgrims, sponsors, friends and team gather on Thursday evening for Send Off, the aroma of mounds of fried chicken fills the air - the first act of a Walk weekend is to eat. There is something comfortable and comforting about sharing a meal together. In what seems like a very short amount of time, the awkward silence that once filled the room as tangible as the smell of the chicken is soon replaced with chatter and lively conversations. How quickly this gathering of people transforms from a quiet, insecure group to a rowdy bunch.
As the weekend continues to progress, we learn how important it is to live a life of piety, study and action - and life that is grounded by going into our own prayer closet and offering ourselves to God to use in Christian action as a part of the body of Christ. Prayers are lifted for those who need the weekend the most and for those who think they need the weekend the least. Prayers are lifted as we lay our burdens at the foot of the cross. Prayers are lifted as a table as we each hold the hand cross that others have held. Prayers are lifted in the speakers' chapel and in the pilgrim's chapel. Everything and everyone is steeped in prayer as we join our voices together and pray the Prayer to the Holy Spirit. Yes, we pray . . . and we pray . . . and we pray and what comes from all that prayer?

Yes, that's right! Love, love, love! We see love on the face of our new friends at our table. We see love in the eyes of the speakers who talk about God's gift of grace. We hear love in the voices of the speakers who share their stories that have shaped and formed their lives in such a profound way. We see love on the faces illuminated by candles. And most profoundly we begin to recognize that look of agape love upon our own faces that stirs our hearts.
What a transformation from Eat, Pray, Love, a transformation we have seen before. Jesus blessed and then broke the bread, gave thanks to God, and shared the broken bread with his followers. Jesus showed us in the most perfect way how to Eat, Pray, Love. Glory be to the King!
De Colores,
Rev. Cathy Partridge

Message from the Community Board
Paying Forward
What an honor it is to serve our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. My Emmaus experience changed my life forever. I am so happy to be able to give back just a little by working walks and serving on the Board. As the Treasurer of the Dallas Emmaus Board, I have been surprised at the number of people who need scholarship help. The economy is going fine if you are employed, but it can be brutal for those out of work, those with health problems, etc. The Emmaus community is blessed to have giving caring people. One such person sends us a check for $30.00 every month. No one asked this person to do this, it is just a simple gift given from the heart.
This gift allows 2 people to go on their walk even if they can't afford it or it keeps the cost down for everyone who is going on their walk. The Board works very hard to keep the cost of a walk as low as possible for everyone involved. When you think about the value that is packed into a 72 hour love fest with our Lord for between $180 and $210, how can you spend your money or time better? If you have been financially blessed and can give, please do so. Please remember that Emmaus is not the first priority. Give to your church first, and only if you can give above and beyond, then give to Emmaus.
De Colores,
Tim Bubel
