Message from the Community Lay Director
Dallas Emmaus Community Board of Director Elections
It is election time again and NO, I don't mean Democrat vs Republican. Each year at this time, we elect 4 new Board members, 2 female and 2 male. This is typically an election that is difficult for the voters (that would be you) and this year is no exception. I personally am always in awe of the caliber of people on the ballot and it is always very difficult for me to cast my ballot because I have to choose between really good people. I am still thinking about this one.
Karole Horch, Nancy Summers, Scott Andrews and Kirk Ragsdale have all served the DEC very well and with great passion for our community for the last 3 years. Of course, Nancy was the Community Lay Director last year. All have worked hard behind the scenes to ensure that Walks are held properly with great Teams and everything that is needed for a weekend. These Board members have represented you, the Dallas Emmaus Community, with integrity and a servants' hearts. They have worked hard without Thanks or pats on the back, simply because they love the Emmaus movement and what it does for people and our churches. God has truly blessed us with their leadership. Please take the next opportunity that you have to Thank them for their outstanding service to the Dallas Emmaus Community.
We need you to take a minute when you are at the next Candlelight in later this month or get on the website at www.dallasemmaus.org and cast your ballot electronically. It is important this year that you make an effort, as we only have 1 Candlelight before the election is over on March 31. If you know those on the ballot, you know what great choices are available to you. Cast your ballot soon!

What's Love Got to Do with It?
A man on a plane sat down next to a beautiful young lady. She was the most gorgeous woman he had ever seen. It was love at first sight. He struck up a conversation with her, "Are you married?" "No," she said. "Are you engaged?" "No." "Are you dating anyone?" "No." "Why isn't a beautiful woman like you not dating?" She replied, "I am looking for a man with certain qualities." He asked, "What kind of qualities are you looking for in a man?" She replied, "I like native American Indians. I love their skin color and high cheek bones. I also like Jewish men. Jewish men seem so brilliant and are financially successful. But I also like the good ole boys from the south, their southern drawl and the way they treat a woman. By the way, what's your name?" He answered, "My name is Geronimo Bernstein, but my friends call me Bubba."
At a recent Women's Emmaus Walk, a usual theme arose from one of the talks. "What's love got to do with it" became the answer to every question, the brunt of every joke and the response to every action from the Justifying Grace talk through the Closing. So, for this Valentine month, I thought I would just reflect on "what love has to do with it." Unlike "Geronimo Bernstein better known as "Bubba," those of us who have experienced the love of God know that while love may produce a feeling, love it's self is not a feeling.

According to scripture, love is always seen as a decision. John 3:16 implies that because of God's great love for us, He made the decision to send His Son to die that we may have everlasting life. John 15:9 reads, "Just as the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you; abide in My love". This verse implies that Jesus has loved us with the love of God. The word abide implies that a decision must be made to remain or stay in this love relationship. John 15:13 reads, "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down his life for his friends." This verse implies we are capable of having great love. Not many of us true lovers of God, would hesitate to give our lives for someone we love. That is great love! Yet, according to this scripture, there is an even greater love and that love was demonstrated for us when Jesus Christ died for us on the cross. And that, Children of God, is "what love has to do with it." We love because Christ first loved us with a gift that just keeps on giving.
This Valentine why not give your loved ones a gift that doesn't really cost us anything financially, but that pays big dividends. A gift that will only cost you the time and energy required to ask Christ to love others through you.
Happy Valentines,
Rev. Ella McDonald

Message from the Dallas Emmaus ComunityBoard
We all remember how we felt when we came home from our Walk to Emmaus. Many were very emotional and had a hard time expressing their feelings. Many of us were fired-up. A lot of us had a renewed sense of purpose or mission; we had very specific things we knew God was calling us to do...and we were going to do them! And some of us were simply in a warm, loving place; we were feeling God's love in a fresh and wonderful way...and we were loving and hugging just about everyone. Do you remember it....the way you felt that Sunday evening on the way home from your Walk?
When I attend Closing ceremonies, one of the most common things I hear from the pilgrims is something like "This was great. I just can't explain it, but I'm gonna tell my family and friends they just have to do this!" They are excited to share this wonderful experience of God's love with the people that mean the most to them.
One of our favorite traditional songs on Walk to Emmaus is "Pass It On" by Kurt Kaiser. A little piece of the lyric goes like this:

That's how it is with God's love, Once you've experienced it, you spread His love to everyone; You want to pass it on.
So, consider this. Has God tugged on you from time to time to share what you experienced on your Walk to Emmaus with someone else that would benefit from a similar experience? If you're like me, maybe it's been a while since your Walk...and maybe you haven't sponsored someone for quite some time.
Let me encourage you do try something. If you still have your letters from your Walk (and I hope you do!), get them out this week and re-read them. Remember how special Sunday was when you first read them? Remember how loved you felt in that moment...remembering how surely Candlelight could not be topped...and yet more love was piled on with this intensely personal expression of God's love for you through others.
If your Walk to Emmaus was rich... and loving... and transforming... consider sharing it with someone you care about. Sponsor them on their Walk to Emmaus.
Pass It On!
