Message from the Board

I believe . . .

'Tis the season to think about what we believe in.  I know there are many among us that believe there is a Santa Claus, and I can't say I blame them.   Those who believe receive abundant and extravagant gifts.  The same can be said for those who believe in God!  We received the abundant gift of the grace of Jesus Christ and the extravagant gift of forgiveness for our sins.   A stocking stuffed full of Godiva chocolates and a tree surrounded by hundreds of gifts can't even come close to the gifts we receive from our Creator God every day of our lives.  And I am thankful.

But at this time of year I also pause to realize just how much I believe in the Walk to Emmaus experience.  Ten years ago in November I was a pilgrim on Walk 145.  Little did I know then what trials and tribulations I would face.  The farthest thing from my mind at that time was giving a talk, much less going into ministry.   I remember thinking like so many pilgrims do, that I just wanted to get involved.  I wanted to work on that team called "Fourth Day."  I wanted to experience again and again the excitement of coming face-to-face with agape love.  I wanted it, not only for myself, but I wanted to share the experience with others and I wanted to volunteer to be a part so that others could have the same opportunity.  Throughout those ten years I have served on many teams - all because I believe in the Emmaus experience.
believe
Yes, I believe in Emmaus . . .
and I believe in the One
who created it all.

I began to learn on Walk 145 just how much God loved me.  I began to learn on Walk 145 that even if I was the only person on the face of the earth, that God would still send sunsets and sunrises so that I could praise His workmanship and marvel at His creation.  I began to learn on Walk 145 that I had a strong faith-based group around me that would walk with me on the mountaintops and lift me up when I was in a valley.  I began to learn on Walk 145 that I could make lifelong friendships with my brothers and sisters in Christ.  I began to learn those things, but God isn't done with me yet.

Yes, I believe in Emmaus . . . and I believe in the One who created it all.  So what or who do you believe in?  How do you share that belief with others?  It takes all of us, lay and clergy alike, to believe in the Emmaus experience.  Examine your beliefs.  Then do something about it!

Give Thanks

In Sunday School  last Sunday, we were discussing songs that remind us of Thanksgiving.  Many old standards were brought up, but then someone else in the class mentioned the song that I was thinking about - Give Thanks by Don Moen.

GIVE THANKS

WITH A GRATEFUL HEART
GIVE THANKS
TO THE HOLY ONE
GIVE THANKS
FOR HE'S GIVEN
JESUS CHRIST, HIS SON
(X2)

AND NOW LET THE WEAK SAY
I AM STRONG
LET THE POOR SAY
I AM RICH
BECAUSE OF WHAT
THE LORD HAS DONE
FOR US
(X2)
GIVE THANKS...

The lyrics of this song certainly apply to Thanksgiving , but it also relates to so much more for me.I saw it in action just the other day.   I was at Closing for Walk 229.  As the ladies stepped to the podium to answer the 2 questions, I heard the story of an incredible weekend spent witnessing God's Love from each of the speakers.  What a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon.  If you have ever been to a Closing that wasn't yours, you know what I am telling you about.  A thought hit me on the way home last Sunday as I was humming the song;  this is a song that I really took to heart on my Walk!  What a beautiful song.  May God continue to Bless you and may you Gives Thanks with a grateful heart.

Dallas Emmaus Community Website

A community needs to stay in contact. The website at www.dallasemmaus.org is one resource you can use but not the only one.  It complements and supports other methods to stay in contact that our community uses.

  • Newsletters: the website has an archive of past newsletters and instructions to sign up for the newsletter

  • Facebook: the website has a link to DEC's facebook page, be sure to join by clicking on the 'like' button

  • Gatherings/Meetings: the website has a calendar to help you keep track of the date of events and walks

  • Support a Walk or Walker: the website has information on being a sponsor, making agape, signing up for a Prayer Vigil as well as working as part of the 4th day team. Coming soon: a PayPal button will be added for donations to help reduce fees and provide scholarships.
web
Still there may be questions.  The website has a list of common questions called FAQs.  There are also names and email addresses for individuals serving on the various Boards and Committees.  You are never far from the answer you seek. Since DEC is not in isolation there are links to other websites for Chrysalis and Upper Room's Emmaus website.

There is also a forum for posting a joy or concern on the prayer wall. You will need to register to be able to post. Only registrations with your full name as the user name will be accepted. For example: 'John Smith' not 'jsmith'.

So stay in contact and visit www.dallasemmaus.org

Please email webmaster@dallasemmaus.org if you have questions or suggestions about the website.
KAIROS of Texas

Looking for an opportunity to serve in a powerful ministry?  Visit Kairos of Texas online to find out about the units and areas of ministiries near you.

Kairos is a prison ministry whose success is dependent on the community of faith support in providing agape such as prayer chain signatures, cookies, and financial donations.  If you are interested in knowing more about how you can participate, or to find out how to attend a Kairos closing, email the editors for information.
