Each Walk's success is a result of your prayers for the pilgrims and team. Please visit the Dallas Emmaus Community website to sign the online Prayer Vigil. The online Prayer Vigil supplements (but does not replace) the paper Prayer Vigil that is passed around at Candlelights and other DEC events for signature. Both the hand-signed and the printed online Prayer Vigils are posted during Walks for Pilgrims to see who has been praying for them.

Sponsorship in Emmaus

To most who share in it, The Walk to Emmaus is a life event that is a gift.  It should be treated as such on your Fourth Day.  I know how thankful that I still am for my sponsor for helping me go on my Walk to Emmaus.  Growing up, my parents always taught me, both with their actions and words, that if given a gift, one should either return the favor or "pay it forward",  as appropriate.  This is very much how I have always felt about my Walk.  As is stated at closing, the best thing a Pilgrim can do with their gift is to sponsor someone else.  What a wonderful thing to do for someone!  Yet sometimes when we try to share this gift, we are rebuffed and don't quite understand it.  I know that when I first came off of my Walk,  I wanted to share it with so many people and was confused why they would not accept my invitation.

We learn on the Walk that in sharing the Love of Christ, we should sow the seed and allow the Holy Spirit to nurture it.  I have learned that this is the BEST way to share the gift of The Walk to Emmaus.  It took me a while to understand the term God's Time.  God guides us and someone that He has chosen for this experience, if we only listen.  When wanting to invite someone, we should truly seek someone who is "ready".  Remember, the Walk is NOT designed to fix or patch up those who are hurting.  It is designed to create leaders for the local church.  So please be cognizant of this.  Look for those that are clearly pursuing their Faith Journey.

As a sponsor, there is much work to be done on the Pilgrims behalf.  Do it well.  A Pilgrim only gets one Walk.  We should do everything that we can to make it special.  We are excited for them to go on their Walks, as we know the wonders of God's Love that they will experience.  We know that it is worth sharing!   Support those in your church and others that you know who will take their Walks.  Let them see you living your faith, nurture them in Love and in God's time, they too will go on their walk to Emmaus.

Heaven Must Be Like This

"Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face". The Ohio Players sang a song in the 70's that begin with these lyrics, "You know what I think heaven is, I think heaven is you. You know a place where I can find happiness. A place close to your loveliness. Somewhere to rest my aching mind, where there's no time, your love just divine."

I find that this divine love is like a surprise birthday party, that somehow just sneaks up on you. You're not planning for it, you are not expecting it, and you aren't looking for it. It is something that just happens! It gives us no warning, and no anticipation. In fact, it catches us off guard! It is an unexpected joy that lies far above our imagination. This love is a gift unlike any other, in that it is a gift that takes possession of you rather than you taking possession of it. Like an electric shock, this love divine is a light that shines in the midst of darkness.

Experiencing Candlelight as a pilgrim on the Korean Emmaus Walk, I was overwhelmed with this kind of love and I thought to myself, "Heaven must be like this!" As I watched the lights approach me, and saw the smiles on the faces of the community glowing with the love of Christ, knowing that the glow came from being in the very presence of God and through the fellowship of other believers, I thought to myself, "Heaven must be like this!" As I looked at the faces of love from those whom I really did not know and of whom I actually may never see again, I thought to myself, "Heaven must be like this!" I believe that I will hold the smiles of each of those faces in my heart forever.

The question arises, whether or not we will know each other in Heaven. Because I believe that our purpose when we get to Heaven is to glorify God, I dare not share my opinion about that here. I'll just say as Paul has said, "Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face." 1 Cor. 13:12 NIV. For you see, I believe even if we do not know each other in Heaven, it will not matter. We will be so thrilled to be in the presence of God that only joy will exist, leaving no room for sadness.

After the Candlelight service, as I witnessed the pilgrims sitting on the floor around a large wooden cross with each face bathe in candle lights and shone with acceptance and love, I thought to myself, "Heaven must be like this!" As I heard the voices calling out to God in unknown tongues, I thought to myself, "Heaven must be like this!" As I stood and joined in the praise I thought to myself, "Heaven must be like this!" Here I was on the other side of the world, far from home, participating in an Emmaus Event, and it was one of the most powerful things I have ever felt, and as I thought to myself, " Heaven must be like this", and tears of joy, love, and thanksgiving streamed down my cheeks.

Knowing that I have brothers and sisters in Christ around me and I that I have Christ to sustain me no matter where I am is a wonderful feeling. Indeed, "Heaven Must Be Like This!"
