"What is Chrysalis?"

According to the Upper Room, before a caterpillar becomes a butterfly it goes through a growth stage during which it is called "chrysalis."  On the surface it may not look like much is happening, but the delicate chrysalis process changes the fuzzy caterpillar into an awesome butterfly with wings of intricate designs and intense colors. The chrysalis process symbolizes how Christ can transform you into something beyond your dreams. It happens when you grow beyond yourself, opening your life to Jesus' power and love.

"Chrysalis" is the name chosen for the youth and young adult version of The Walk to Emmaus, its parent movement, because it symbolizes the spiritual growth that is essential between adolescence and adulthood. That growth is as crucial for youth as the cocoon is for the caterpillar. It is that precious time of nurturing a person's faith for discipleship.

Chrysalis "Flights" (for 10th through 12th graders) and "Journeys" (for young adults, ages 19-24) are three-day events. This three-day spiritual renewal time provides an opportunity for you to learn more about faith, to experience Christian love and support, and to make new faith commitments. The point is to inspire, challenge and equip for a closer friendship with Chris and for Christian action at home, church, school and community.

Chrysalis lifts up a way to enjoy Christ's friendship and love and to be Christ's friend and partner in the world. The three days focus on God's grace, experience with Christ as a friendship, what it means to be the body of Christ, and giving love to a needy world.

Chrysalis' goal is to build youth leaders for local churches and communities. It provides these skills with an infusion of God's amazing grace.

Brighten The Corner Where You Are

Service! It begins right where you are. Some are called to positions of prominence and power. Some toil anonymously behind the scenes. Some only wait. But all serve even those who only wait.

As we wait to learn who our new Board members are we serve. As we wait to learn who will be called to the team we serve. God places each of us in the right place at the right time...the place and time where we can best serve God. This is our corner! Let us remember to brighten the place where we are wherever it is.

We are the light of the world. (Matt 5:14-16) When we brighten our corners we illumine the path for others. We illumine the paths for the Pilgrims on the Walk to Emmaus regardless of what corner we are in. Our corner might be a Lay Director, a Spiritual Director, Assistant Table Leader, Team Assistant, or a member of the 4th Day Team. As unimportant or important it may seem to us our corner might be helping to turn a dream into a reality.

We also illumine the paths for the members of the Dallas Emmaus Community regardless of what corner we occupy. Our corner might be a member of the Board or Auxiliary Board, an attendee at a gathering or a Candlelight, or someone sponsoring a Pilgrim. We may not always realize the impact of our actions on one another.

In all that we do let us all remember that we serve God by serving each other. We also illumine the paths for each other with a smile, a kind word, a pat on the back, or assistance with a task. These corners can brighten the lives of others while also praising God.

As Helen Steiner Rice expresses it:

"If everybody brightened up
the spot where they're standing,
By being more considerate
and a little less demanding,
This dark old world would very soon
eclipse the evening star.
If everybody brightened up
the corner where they are!"

Let us always keep our light shining brightly.

The Gift

After my brother went on his pilgrim walk several years ago, he tried to describe The Walk to me since I was going on my own pilgrim walk the following month. After a few attempts at describing it, he simply said, "It's a gift." He was right! The Walk to Emmaus is a gift. It's a gift from a sponsor to a pilgrim. It's a gift from the servant team to the pilgrims. It's a gift from the outside team to the inside team. In turn, it's our gift to God when we serve his people. And it's a gift from God to see how He works within the lives of both pilgrims and team members on a Walk Weekend and in the Fourth Day.

Have you given "The Gift" to someone lately? Have you sponsored someone on a Walk, or served on a team, or made agape, or signed up and prayed for the pilgrims and team for a Walk, or told someone what Emmaus has meant to you? Those are all great ways of sharing "The Gift" with others.

However, there is a new way. The Upper Room International Emmaus Office has launched a new program, aptly

called "THE GIFT." According to the Upper Room, the purpose of this program is to support the establishment and growth of the Emmaus and Chrysalis movements throughout the world. All monies contributed to this dedicated fund will be used exclusively for that purpose. No funds raised for THE GIFT will be used for expenses, salaries, or other administrative costs.

The Upper Room has directed that each Emmaus and Chrysalis community include copies of the attached flyer in the packets for pilgrims and caterpillars. Information about THE GIFT will also be shared at Follow Up and located on the http://www.dallasemmaus.org/news.htm.

What can you do? Prayerfully consider passing THE GIFT of

Emmaus/Chrysalis on to someone on the other side of the world by making a monetary gift to this dedicated fund. Some person in some foreign country would have the chance to experience the grace of God and love of Christ on a Walk or Flight thanks to your generosity. This would truly be THE GIFT that could keep on giving.

Message From The Community Spiritual Director

April 2010 Trip To Seoul, South Korea

In October 2009, some representatives from the South Korean Emmaus Community invited and opened their doors to host ten Americans from the North Texas Emmaus Communities to be their guests and observe an Emmaus Walk in Seoul, South Korea.

We accepted their invitation. Vikki Culwell had made all the arrangements for us and we were off to Seoul! Needless to say, if I wrote everyday for a year, I could not give a complete report of our experiences, but I hope to give you at least a glimpse of that experience over the next two months.

Matthew 28:16-17 (MSB) says, "Meanwhile, the eleven disciples were on their way to Galilee, headed for the mountain Jesus had set for their reunion. The moment they saw Him they worshiped Him. Some, though, held back, not sure about worship, about risking themselves totally."

On April 5, eleven Americans from four Emmaus communities, boarded a plane headed to the mountains of Seoul, South Korea. Feeling commissioned to do so, we headed for the mountain of Korea thinking we were the Upper Room experts on how the Walk to Emmaus should be run and led. With some disagreement about the best ways to see it completed, we all went with our idea of how to grace the Koreans with our presence and knowledge of the Upper Room Emmaus rules and guidelines. However, on this trip, I felt like I was not only a foreigner in another country, but a foreigner not coming to grace the Koreans Emmaus Experience with my presence, but as one being permitted to experience the presence of God in new and wondrous ways. Through it all God taught me a valuable lesson. He showed me that by no means do the Western Emmaus Communities hold an automatic edge in the task of equipping saints for the work of the local church. As I thought back on this experience, I was reminded of how big our God is and how capable He is of working in places and ways that I can neither understand nor predict.

Representing on this trip, the Texoma Emmaus Community were Darold and Barbara Myer. From the Denton Emmaus Community were William and Theresa Rogers, Joe and Victoria Culwell, and Vera Gibbs. From the Dallas Emmaus Community were Kirk and Palmer Ragsdale and Rev. Ella McDonald. We were also blessed to have Rev. Sungnam Choi, director of the Korean/Asian and Pacific Islander Ministries, from Nashville, Tennessee meet us there and become our translator and tour guide.

When we arrived in Seoul, we were met by a welcoming committee who were very friendly and anxious to help us navigate the cities in and near Seoul, South Korea. In fact, the whole Methodist and Emmaus Communities seemed to be competing with each another on ways to welcome us to their country. I cannot speak for anyone but myself, but as for me, this was the trip of a lifetime. I do not believe that I will ever forget the many wonderful sights that we saw, and I know I will never forget the kindness and absolute graciousness of the Korean people, especially the members of the Emmaus Community. Yes, I will treasure this trip for the rest of my life.

Although we received many warnings about safety from our friends in the States, I assure you we never once felt unsafe on our trip. I looked to see how many Americans I could see and was surprised that even though there are American military bases there we saw very few Americans. We visited numerous sights, including, the Methodist Headquarters, the Gyeongbokgung Palace, the Sejong Center, the Namsangol Traditional Korean Village, the Seoul Tower, the Yangwajin Foreign Missionary Cemetery, the Seoul Festival where the B Boys, a group of Korean break dancers, performed, and many other sights and museums. We ate three full meals a day at many traditional Korean restaurants and palaces in Seoul. I have never seen so much food on the table all at one time in my life. Dish after dish after dish, the food kept coming. It seemed that the more food we ate, the more food they brought out. As a special treat for us Americans, we also ate at the Korean Outback Steak House Restaurant where I ate what I hope was pork baby back ribs.

After five days of tours and bus rides, it was finally Saturday and we each were given an opportunity to spend a night in the homes of our host families and to worship with them in their local churches. I and Joe and Vikki were blessed above the rest in that we could actually understand the sermon at the church we visited. Okay, let me explain. By the grace of God, I was given an opportunity to preach at the Dong Soo Methodist Church where I spoke in English and it was translated in the Korean language by the pastor of the church, Rev. Haksun Joo. This was a wonderful, stimulating, and eye-opening interaction for me that I will never forget.

I thank God and the Dallas Emmaus Community for affording me the opportunity to participate in something so wonderful. I know beyond a shadowed of a doubt that the sophisticated and Christ-honoring movement of the Korean Emmaus Community will continue to exist and grow whether I or anyone else from the west ever goes back to the Seoul Emmaus Community or not.

I will talk more about the actual Walk experience in my next article. This month, I thought it important to let you know that overall, we loved our experience in South Korea and if you can go, I highly recommend a visit to this delightful country.

Communication Comes From Community

Many of us feel that we communicate better face to face. That might be true. What I find is that although I prefer to talk with someone face to face over another means that won't allow me to reach nearly as many people or hear what more than just one person at a time has to say. Jesus implored his Disciples to spread out and reach out across the globe. We do that today on the Internet using our community website www.dallasemmaus.org. By each of us participating in a two way stream of information we can better communicate what the Holy Spirit has laid on our hearts and minds that we should share. I am asking you to think of what you have to share right now and write it down. I thought of a few items.

We need more Reunion Groups to help our members enjoy their Fourth Days more. You can go to the website and send us your group's information. We show almost 70 groups now. We have almost 7000 members in the community. We can't all fit in that sampling or travel to the current locations shown even if we could.

Our community forum is a place that allows us to share our joys and concerns with more members and specific groups in the community. Go and check it out. It only takes a minute to register. You can read the posts without registering. If we could get more sponsors, team members and clergy involved in using our forum, maybe the community would follow. If you are a Lay Director or Spiritual Director on upcoming Walks, give it a try. You can always copy and paste it into an email after posting in the forum.

We always rely on the community and you specifically, to let us know of anyone who may show an interest in learning more about The Walk or Chrysalis. This is especially true today when the Holy Spirit urges you to reach out and make a friend, be a friend, and bring a friend to Christ.

DeColores,

Scott Andrews
