Message From The Community Lay Director
The Walk to Emmaus - Can You Describe It?
What do you say when you try to explain The Walk to Emmaus to someone you are considering sponsoring or to fellow church members, friends or co-workers who have not gone on a Walk?
"It's a three-day journey with Jesus." "It's like being wrapped in God's love." "It's a 72-hour short course in Christianity." "It's simply a gift."
No matter how hard we try to describe The Walk to Emmaus, we just can't seem to find the right words! That's because The Walk to Emmaus is unique to each person who attends. Each of us embarks on The Walk at a different time and place in our lives, and carrying different baggage, from anyone else.
To equip ourselves for the task of sponsoring or informing others about The Walk, many of us have read the Upper Room booklets, Sponsoship and What Is Emmaus? These are great resources for that purpose. But some of us are not as likely to sit down and read a book, however brief and well done it may be, before striking out on the path of telling others about Emmaus.
Other than the struggle to ensure that every Walk to Emmaus hosted by the Dallas Emmaus Community follows the Upper Room "model," the greatest challenge facing our Community (and virtually all other Emmaus Communities) is good sponsorship.
To better equip us for taking that step in faith of sponsoring someone or explaining the Walk to Emmaus to our friends and fellow church members, the Upper Room has released a video called, Introduction to Walk to Emmaus. This eleven-minute movie explains the Emmaus movement, offers testimonies, and helps the viewer understand Emmaus as it relates to the local church.
Remember the words from the Christian Action talk? Make a friend. Be a friend. Introduce your friend to Christ. Same thing is true with Emmaus. The Upper Room intends that we use this video, along with the Emmaus brochures, to introduce the Walk to Emmaus movement to churches not involved in Emmaus.
The movie is available on DVD from the Upper Room for $10. Copies of the DVD can also be purchased at the upcoming Spring Gathering. So, feel free to share this DVD with Christians of any denomination who want to take another step in faith.
Describing your Walk to Emmaus to someone who hasn't experienced the Walk may be impossible. But telling them that God loves them and explaining how they might experience God's love and grace in a new and deeper way isn't!

Message From The Community Spiritual Director
What a Difference a Day Can Make
At the crack of dawn on Sunday, the women came to the tomb carrying the burial spices they had prepared. They found the entrance stone rolled back from the tomb, so they walked in. But once inside, they couldn't find the body of the Master, Jesus. That same day two of them were walking to the village of Emmaus about seven miles outside of Jerusalem. They were deep in conversation, going over all these things that had happened. In the middle of their talk and questions, Jesus came up and walked along with them. They came to the edge of the village where they were headed. He acted as if He were going on but they pressed Him: "Stay and have supper with us. It's nearly evening; the day is done." (Luke24: 1-2; 13-15; 28-29 MSB)
In 1957, Dinah Washington sang a song, titled 'What a Difference a Day Makes' which won her a Grammy in 1959. As a kid, I remember hearing this song over and over again the summer after my great-grandfather was killed in an automobile accident. My great-grandmother, who loved to listen to the blues, found comfort in the lyrics of this song. I cannot remember all of the lyrics, but I do remember the first line. It went something like this, "What a difference a day made, twenty four little hours brought the sun and the flowers where there used to be rain."
I do not know what day it was that made the difference in her life, but all of us have a day or some special occasions that we can say made a difference in our lives. For some, it may have been the day a child was born. For others, it may have been the day you got married. But whatever the occasion, those kinds of emotion filled days leave a lasting impression on us that causes us to remember the feelings we experienced. Those are the type of days that can bring deep meaning to us for the rest of our lives.
As I look back and remember, one of those touchstone days in my life happened on my Walk to Emmaus. On the first night they told us that the two disciples made that journey in one day, but we were going to take three days. Well, I was there for three days, but each day was so different it seemed as if I was there for three one day experiences. Each day brought me more spiritual strength and healing. The same is true for the disciples. They made the walk in one day, but look what all happened in that one day. First, they walked alone grieving and talking about the death of Jesus. Secondly, a stranger came alone and warmed their hearts. Thirdly, they broke bread with the stranger and recognized Him and finally on that same day, they left in enthusiasm to tell the others what they had experienced. That's exactly what happened to me on the road to Emmaus.
Like the two disciples that walked that Emmaus road on that first Easter, I was taking a walk through my brokenness. As I began the walk wondering how or whether God could or would use me in service anymore, Jesus showed up and spoke to my heart. As I continued to walk along with Him on that three-day journey, He reminded me of how much He loved and wanted me and that warmed my heart. After we had broken bread together on that second day, I was ready to tell the world about this Jesus who revealed Himself to me in a way that I had never seen Him before.
What a difference that weekend made in my life. Emmaus made a difference in my enthusiasm, my endurance, my understanding of evangelism, and in my everyday living. While Emmaus is not a place to take people to fix them, for me it was what I need to continue in my faith walk. What a difference a day makes. In one day, I discovered that the power of new life and resurrection is available on The Road to Emmaus.
My assignment for this article was to introduce someone to The Walk to Emmaus. The best way I know to do that is to simply ask you to think about my experience and then ask yourself: "When have I been on the road to Emmaus?" Where on that road did God meet me and bring me to the place I am today in my Christian walk?"
If you can remember what part of that road that made a difference in your life, I ask you to respond by going back to that place and allowing God to use you to serve others who travel a similar path. I learned that weekend, that God not only calls us to invite and receive, but He also calls us to respectfully respond and to share the impossible, but good news, that CHRIST IS RISEN!
Happy Easter,
Rev. Ella McDonald

Spring Gathering - May 1, 6:00 p.m.
The snow is gone (we hope!), and Spring has sprung! That means it's nearly time for the DEC Spring Gathering and Annual Meeting. This Gathering will be held at First United Methodist Church Royse City on Saturday, May 1, beginning at 6:00 p.m.We will finish in time for everyone to make it out to Sabine Creek Ranch for Candlelight for Women's Walk #225.
Who says you can't mix business with pleasure? The Spring Gathering and Annual Meeting is proof to the contrary. The Annual Meeting of the DEC is an important opportunity for you to learn about activities and decisions by the Board and learn about the current financial status of the Community. You will ratify the actions of the Board in the past year and the 2010-2011 Board of Directors elections. You will hear some new tips and information for being a good sponsor, plus you will see the new video released by the Upper Room called, "Introduction to Walk to Emmaus." To top it off, you will have a chance to ask questions of the Board and offer your ideas and suggestions.
That's the business part. But don't forget the pleasure part! We will join together for food, fun and fellowship, too! Please plan to come. Bring a dish or drink for the potluck dinner.
FUMC Royse City is located at 325 Josephine Street (corner of Josephine and Main Streets) in Royse City. We will meet in the Fellowship Hall in the Wesley Hall building next to the sanctuary. A flyer with schedule details and a map to FUMC Royse City are available on the DEC website [http://www.dallasemmaus.org/nextgathering.htm].
Hope to see you there!

Your DEC Board at Work - The Nuts and Bolts
At this time every year, there are 8 people are on the ballot for 4 positions on the Dallas Emmaus Board. Unlike typical elections, these candidates do not campaign and make promises they cannot carry out. These 8 Community members have already committed to serve the Dallas Emmaus Community and, if elected to the Board, to sign this Community's covenant with the Upper Room to follow the Walk to Emmaus "model."
The DEC Board is made up of 12 elected members, 6 men and 6 women, each serving a three-year term. As one group of 4 elected members rolls off the Board, another elected group of 4 comes onto the Board. Also serving on the Board by appointment are the Community Spiritual Director and up to 2 Community Assistant Spiritual Directors. The chair of the Metro Committee and the chair of the Chrysalis Board round out the DEC Board membership. The DEC Board's primary responsibilities are to honor the covenant of the Upper Room, thereby ensuring consistency in the core content from Walk-to-Walk, and to oversee the ongoing workings of the Community.
Annually, the DEC Board elects a Community Lay Director, treasurer and secretary from among its current elected members. The DEC Board meets each month, except December and January, on the fourth Monday of the. The meetings are opened in prayer, and the Board celebrates in Holy Communion.During the meetings, the Board conducts Community business and addresses any issues that arise..
It has been my great honor and pleasure to serve on the Board for the past 3 years in the role of secretary. I would like to extend to you an invitation to attend a Board meeting, they are open to the Community. You can find the date, time and location of upcoming next Board meeting in the "scrolling screen" on the DEC website.
