Message From The Community Lay Director
The DEC - How it Works
Everyone involved in Emmaus knows that Walks to Emmaus don't "just happen." Much prayer, thought, planning and action are required to hold a single Emmaus weekend. For each Walk, members of the Emmaus Community come together and form an Emmaus team to serve the Pilgrims on that Walk.
But first, someone has to decide when and where the Walk will be held, who the lay and clergy leaders for the Walk will be, and who will support the Walk in a multitude of ways.
That is where the local Emmaus board and regional committees come into play.
Each year, the Dallas Emmaus Community and all other Emmaus communities across the country and around the world are required to sign a Letter of Agreement with The Upper Room International Emmaus Office, whereby we agree to conduct the Emmaus program in our community according to the Upper Room "model." In fact, every member of the DEC board of directors is required to sign this letter agreement with the Upper Room as a sign of their faithfulness to the "model."
Your Dallas Emmaus board of directors consists of twelve elected Community lay members, each serving a three-year term. Each year, four new lay members are elected to the board, and four lay members roll off. Similar to a Walk team, each member of the board has a specific role, and it takes all members of the board working together for all of the work to be done.
I would also like to announce the appointment of Will Dunn as the Assistant Community Lay Director for our community for the balance of the 2009-2010 board year. Will was elected to the DEC board in 2009 and will add the Assistant CLD duties to his other board duties. Also, please join me in welcoming Rev. Cathy Partridge to the board as an Assistant Community Spiritual Director. Cathy will be assisting Rev. Ella McDonald, our Community Spiritual Director, on clergy-related issues and tasks for the board.
Our community is blessed with willing volunteers and elected servants who give of their time and talents for the Lord. Please do your part. Please take a moment now to pray about and then vote for the four new members of your choice for the 2010-2011 DEC Board of Directors. Deadline for ballots is March 31.

Message From The Assistant Community Spiritual Director
CASTING LOTS
So they proposed two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias. Then they prayed and said, "Lord, you know everyone's heart. Show us which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place." And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias; and he was added to the eleven apostles. Acts 1:23-26
In this scripture selection in the book of Acts, Luke shares with us the process the disciples went about in selecting the replacement for Judas following Judas' betrayal of Jesus. The importance of this story for us today has little to do with how they got to that point in the story, but has more to do with the process they went through to select the replacement, to fulfill God's prophesied plan. Once Justus and Matthias were identified, Peter drew the body of believers together into full partnership in the decision-making process. He then told them to pray for guidance in making the difficult decision. And last, they cast lots as the means by which God's decision was to be made known.
So, simply put the process went like this:
-
Identify qualified candidates.
-
Call together the body of believers.
-
Ask the believers to pray for God's direction and guidance.
-
Allow the believers to vote.
It is time for us to do the same! Each year at this time we, as the Dallas Emmaus Community, have the opportunity to select the newest board members, who each serve a three-year term. The qualified candidates have been selected, and it is an excellent group of men and women. Talk to them, read about them, and pray for them. Then vote! Ballots will be available at the next two Candlelights (Walk 223 and Walk 224) and on the Dallas Emmaus website at www.dallasemmaus.org. Just like the believers to whom Paul spoke, we too must be engaged in the decision making process.
This Community has been blessed with a Board that constantly and consistently demonstrates good stewardship, diligence, and true silent servant qualities. If you see a current or past Board member, thank them for their service. These individuals have and will continue to work faithfully and tirelessly to direct and support a Community that remembers how important it is to walk alongside Pilgrims, sharing the scripture and their stories on the Road to Emmaus, so that more men and women each year may see Jesus in the breaking of the bread and feel His amazing love and grace, which in turn builds solid Christian leadership for our churches and our homes - and enriches our spiritual lives! Amazing - so prayerfully cast your lot today!
De Colores!
