Gathering the Eggs

As a child, I loved spending time on my grandparent's farm. Among all of the other usual farm equipment, buildings and livestock, they had a chicken coop with hens and roosters. Every day, my grandmother would enter the whitewashed wooden building with chicken wire on the windows. In mostly darkness, she would carefully and lovingly search each nest to gather the eggs. She could have left the eggs where they were. Some might have hatched. Some might have done nothing except sit there. But when she gathered the eggs, she brought them together and put them to use for a greater purpose. Some, she gave to friends as gifts. Some, she used to bake a pie or cake which she then served to family or friends. Others, she simply gave to those in need.

In the same way, each of us can do some good if left alone in our own cozy little nest. But...if we gather together and share our experiences and knowledge with one another, everyone benefits and God is supremely glorified.

The Dallas Emmaus Community has traditionally held an annual Gathering each January, called the New Year Gathering. In the same way as my grandmother gathered her eggs, our Dallas Emmaus Community gathers to share Christian fellowship and love with one another, particularly our newest Community members. Gatherings are the only regular community-wide Emmaus meetings. The Upper Room's Handbook on Emmaus says it best:  "The Emmaus Community's tradition and vision, common memory, and common mind concerning the weekend model can be shared and passed on in the Gatherings."

The purpose of the DEC's New Year Gathering is to allow the brothers- and sisters-in-Christ in this Emmaus Community to do just that. We learn, pray, fellowship, sing, worship, serve...and eat!....together. Come for the fellowship....come for the food.....come for the instruction....come for the music.....come to worship......just come! Everyone - whether you attended your Walk to Emmaus in 2009 or in 1989 - is invited and encouraged to attend.

At the New Year Gathering each year, several informational sessions are held to better equip you to serve. The 2010 New Year Gathering will be held on Saturday, January 23, at Highland Park United Methodist Church [http://www.hpumc.org/]. The event will begin at 3:00p.m. and will conclude by 7:00 p.m. Sessions offered include Musician Training, 4th Day Service, How to Write a Talk, How to Prepare PowerPoints and Posters, the Ins and Outs of the DEC, How to Make a Lanyard, How to Be a "Good" Sponsor, and more. We will also have time for fellowship, share a potluck dinner, and recognize the Pilgrims and Servant Leaders from Walks in 2009.  We will close with a celebration of praise in song, worship and Holy Communion. For a complete schedule of events, times and locations, please refer to the Gathering Flyer.

So, pull out your basket or just use your apron like my grandmother often did. Gather your eggs. Talk with your Reunion Group brothers or sisters about coming to the Gathering. Let others in your church who have attended the Walk to Emmaus know about the Gathering and encourage them to attend. If you sponsored a Pilgrim, whether in 2009 or in years past, call them up and ask them to go with you. This is one time when putting all your eggs in one basket is actually a good thing!

De Colores!  Sings the rooster....and the cluck hen....and the babe chicks.

When All God's Children Get Together

"All the believers were together and had everything in common." Acts 2:44

One of my favorite television shows as a child was Gilligan's Island. The one thing they had in common was that they were all castaways. Yet, because of their very unique personalities, they were totally different from one another. What made the show so interesting was the fact that they were able to survive, because they all complemented each other's strength. The Skipper, because he had the gift of leadership, took charge of leading the group. The professor, a modern day McGyver, because he was so smart, could invent anything or fix any problem. The Howells, because they were rich and had the gift of administration, handled the business matters. Mary-Ann had the gift of encouragement, so she was the comforter and encourager of the group. Ginger, because she could act had the ability to get them out of a jam when visitors came and invaded their space. And Gilligan, bless his heart, was the one with the servant's heart. He would do anything for anyone, but he also messed up everything he tried to do. Sometimes Gilligan would get upset or feel unloved and would separate himself from the group, but it did not take long for him to lose that sense of wholeness that comes through community, and eventually realized that together he and the rest of the group could accomplish things that he could never do alone.

This is the kind of community and togetherness that we want to develop in the Emmaus Community. The Dallas Emmaus Community is having a gathering on January 23, 2010. The key word here is Community. Community can be defined as "A unified body of individuals with common character and common interests, who share joint ownership and participation in something." As I thought about the Emmaus Gathering and why it is so important that we participate in it, the show Gilligan's Island, because in my opinion it is a great picture of community, came to mind. This is what I see happening in this show. It appears that: they each had a sense that their gifts and talents were important; they each had a sense of belonging; and they each felt that sense of support that the others provided. These are all benefits of being in a Community of faith.

The group on Gilligan's Island held on to their individuality and uniqueness as they came together to live, work, and move toward one goal, which was the goal of getting off the island. As The Dallas Emmaus Community, we too can maintain our individualities and uniquenesses as we come together to live, work, and move toward our one goal, which is to advance the Kingdom of God here on Earth. What better way to develop this kind of community than for the body of Christ to come together with fellowship, food, family, friends, and fun?

If we are to be an extension of God's love and goodness and if we are to accomplish His purposes for us as individuals and a church body, then we must have togetherness and common ground. When All God's Children get together, what a time, what a time we are going to have. I am looking forward to seeing you at the Gathering!

DeColores,

Rev. Ella McDonald

Calling All Musicians!!!

Training for anyone who desires to be a Candlelight musician and training for those who wish to be Inside Team musicians. The training provides participants with a notebook that includes the following information:
  1. Updated Music Director's Manual
  2. Checklists for Musicians
  3. Updated Communion Service for Musicians (complete with music)
  4. Thematic Lists and how to select songs during the weekend
  5. Responsibilities at Candlelight ( for the "lead" musician/ for all other attending musicians)
  6. Song Lists
  7. CCLI information
  8. Using "Song Select"
Training is also planned for Easy Worship. Anyone who wants to serve as a "lead" candlelight musician....or anyone serving as a musician on an inside team really needs to have the updated information from both sessions. The Easy Worship training is new to all and is a critical part of a musician's responsibilities if serving on the inside or as a lead musician at candlelight.

Community Sounding Board...

All of the Emmaus-related training that I have received has been very useful.  The Gathering in January, hosted by the Dallas Emmaus Community, will no doubt be of the same quality. The training fundamentals, such as sponsoring and 4th Day duties, have always been important parts of the successful spiritual experience by the benefiting pilgrims. The specialized training offered to musicians and potential speakers presents an effective opportunity to develop important skills, as well. You will also have the opportunity to pick up some tips about "agape-making" for future Walks and Flights. All of these training processes will help to produce a richly spiritual environment with the blessed assistance of the Holy Spirit, sometimes bringing life-changing decisions. We are all looking forward to the Walks and Flights and other Emmaus events in 2010. With God's help we can look forward to contributing to the process of bringing a meaningful experience to each pilgrim. May God bless and guide us, one and all.
