On November 14, 2009, we will host a more condensed Gathering including potluck supper, fellowship, praise, and a 4th day witness. Worship is not held at this Gathering, since it is usually scheduled on the same day as a Candlelight, where we do have a worship service with Holy Communion. For the past few years we have considered it an annual chili cookoff gathering. Come and bring your best pot of chili and sample others. For more information...

Women's Walk #222 at Mt. Lebanon begins Thursday, November 12th, at 6:30 p.m. with Send-off and a potluck dinner. All are welcome.
Candlelight will be held as usual on Saturday night, November 14th, starting at 8:00 p.m. Community members are also invited to attend Closing at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 15th. Plan to come out to Mt. Lebanon. Let your presence be a blessing to the Pilgrims of Walk #222. There are many ways to support Walk #222. For example, support with your presence at the Walk events, or support with your service on the Fourth Day Team, or support with your prayers for the Pilgrims and Team of Walk #222. All of these are important and enrich each Walk. Walk #222...may the Light of Christ be with you! |
Message from the Community Lay Director
Fourth Day Feedback Can you remember your first Fourth Day....the first day after your pilgrim Walk? For some of you, that may have been just a few weeks ago. For others, it was years and years ago. But think back....remember the wonder, the awe, the fatigue, the full stomachs? Did you go through your agape again? Did you read and re-read and re-read your agape letters? Maybe you spent your first Fourth Day talking with your sponsor and others whom you knew had been on a Walk. Perhaps you shared your experience with family, friends or coworkers in the hopes that they would want to go on a Walk themselves. You might have spent your first Fourth Day evaluating your piety, study and action and trying to discern God's call and purpose for your life.
Reflecting on our Walk experience can keep those memories alive within us and rekindle the love of Christ in our own hearts. However, you may remember from the Fourth Day talk that the 72-hour Emmaus event is not primarily for you. It is for your family, your church, your friends, and many people you don't know yet.
Sharing with people how our Walk has changed our lives can spark a fire in their hearts to learn more about God's amazing love and grace. How has your Walk impacted your life? What stories could you share about your Fourth Day?...about how God's gift of grace has made a difference in your life? Please consider sharing your Fourth Day experience with us. Simply send an email to newsletter@dallasemmaus.org. As space permits, your story will be included in an upcoming issue of the Koinonia in a new section called "Fourth Day Feedback."

Message From The Community Spiritual Director
And The Night and the Morning Was the Fourth Day Genesis 1:16-19 God made two great lights-the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning-the fourth day. NIV Each day of the creation story shows us how we grow and develop spiritually. The first three days speak about the growth of our mind, our thinking, our understanding, and our faith. The fourth through the sixth days speak about the growth of our hearts, our love for God and one another. I find it interesting that on the first day, God said "let there be light", but it wasn't until the fourth day that God created the stars, the moon, and the sun. In other words, although there was always light coming from God, we don't comprehend it until we actually see the sun on the fourth day. So, this is what begins to happen on the fourth day: It was on the fourth day that God gave us the sun, which represents our love for the Lord and our acceptance of His love for us. It was on the fourth Day that God gave us the moon to shine at night as a sign to us that in our darkest periods and our times of difficulty, we can have faith in the knowledge that God is with us. It was on the fourth Day that God gave us the stars as fixed spiritual principles that we can use to guide our lives through the difficult times. Sounds a little like Emmaus doesn't it? All who attend an Emmaus Walk begin their spiritual journey with a three-day weekend. During these three days we begin to develop principles of spiritual living and learn how to apply them mentally, but all too soon those three days are over and we begin a journey with no end. Thus, after your Emmaus Walk is over, you hear a lot of talk about something called a "Fourth Day." In Emmaus, when we use the term Fourth Day, what we are really referring to is the rest of your life. One of the questions at the closing service of your personal Emmaus Weekend is "What are you going to do with your experience?" At that moment of excitement and spiritual renewal, many of us make some promises to God, our new faith community, our families, and even ourselves that we really intend to follow through on and keep. But, then we go back into the real world and what started out as a pivotal point in our journey sometimes end up becoming a series of unkept promises that dwindle down to just a nice memory of a fun loving weekend. During those times, when you feel God is not near, the enemy sometimes comes and tempts us to think about cutting corners or doing something out of our old nature, and figuring that nobody would notice the difference, we may say something like, "Well, it wouldn't be so bad if I went back to my old ways." It happens all the time, but this does not have to be your testimony. If you faithfully attend and participate in the life and leadership of your local church, your faith community for support, guidance, and challenge, your Fourth Days will help you develop a life in Christ as Christian leaders who are effective both personally and in your local churches. As Community Spiritual Director it is my prayer that all of your fourth day experiences, much like the workings of Sanctifying Grace, be a continuous process of spiritual growth and development in your relationship with Christ that extends beyond the weekend, into your life in the world so that you can continue to make deeper commitments to Christ and live as faithful disciples throughout the rest of your faith journey.

Living Agape Agape...one of the tangible things we all brought home from our pilgrim Walks. What a blessing it was to receive the little trinkets which reminded us in many creative and different ways of God's love for us! I know my Reunion Group is always on a hunt for really unique agape that we just know the pilgrims will treasure. Lawrence Martin defines agape as follows, "Agape is the New Testament word for God's love expressed to, through, and by God's people." Think about that for a minute...what better or more precious piece of agape could you provide for a pilgrim than yourself. By serving on a 4th Day Team you are providing living agape! In the Gospel of John 13:14-17, Jesus says, "Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them." Blessed! That is always the feeling I come away with after offering myself as living agape and serving on a 4th Day Team. The book, Coming Down from the Mountain, uses the phrase "cycle of blessing" and many of you have heard the phrase "I'm blessed to be a blessing!" To serve on a 4th Day Team and be able to witness God at work through the Holy Spirit in transforming the pilgrims from apprehension and anxiety at Send-off on Thursday to being Spirit-filled and glorious at Closing on Sunday is a blessing! Making new friends while serving side by side with my brothers and sisters as Christ's hands and feet during a Walk weekend is a blessing! Some of my dearest friendships have begun while serving on 4th Day Teams. "Offering acts of agape - sacrificial love - on behalf of others in order that they may move closer to accepting God's love for them is a significant part of the continuing life in grace," according to Robert Wood and Marie Livingston Roy. Working on a 4th Day Team is one of the cheapest types of agape you can give...and you don't need to be creative either! All you need to do is volunteer your time. You can work as little or as much as you would like to on a weekend. You can volunteer by contacting the 4th Day Team leaders listed on the Dallas Emmaus Community website. Remember in the Priority talk during your Walk, you were told that one of the things that make humans unique is they have the ability to choose their priorities. I have made it one of my priorities to serve on at least one 4th Day Team each year. With 2010 fast approaching, I challenge each of you to consider adding this to your list of New Year's resolutions by doing the same. Be blessed to be a blessing...be living agape!
Volunteer to ServeIf you are someone who is interested in serving either on a Conference Room Team, the Dallas Emmaus Board, or on one of the Committees, here are three things you can do to ensure we know who you are. Serve - Work on a 4th Day Team. 4th Day service is the entry point into Conference Room Team Service. The 4th Day Team leaders for upcoming walks will always pass around a sign-up sheet at candlelight for you to sign-up on. Or, you can always sign-up for 4th Day service on the Dallas Emmaus Community website. Click on the Walks This Year or Walks Next Year link at the bottom right side of the homepage and you will find a link to email the 4th Day Director for the walk that fits into your schedule. Sign Up - We realize that not everyone is interested in working on a Conference Room Team, but there are lots of other ways you can serve the Dallas Emmaus Community. Maybe you would like to be a musician at candlelight, make lanyards, help organize gatherings or help move the trailer to the next walk site. If you have a desire to help in any way, please email us and we will make sure to forward your info to the appropriate person - simply tell us what it is you would like to do. Send Your Info - Conference Room Teams are prayerfully chosen by the Men's and Women's Team Selection Committees from a list of those eligible through 4th Day service provided by the community database manager. You've heard of the phrase "garbage in, garbage out" - well, if the database has not been updated with your correct contact information...that might be why you are not being called. Please, take a few minutes to go to the Dallas Emmaus Community website and update your information.

One Reunion Group's Story!
Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. All the kings horses, and all the kings men, couldn't put Humpty together again.
How long were we on that wall? How in the world did we fall apart? It was like slow motion. The momentum of several factors that alone were not critical, but together, threw us off balance, and threatened to scatter long-standing, devoted relationships. How could that have happened to such a, vibrant, dedicated, loving group of reunion sisters? At least half of our group has been together for several years. It remains open to all new pilgrims in our community, and it's large. While there is strength in numbers, size-related challenges began to fragment us. We gathered all the pieces together to determine a solution. First, we looked at the day and time. Both were a bad fit for almost the entire group. Solution: a new time and day of the week that works for the majority. An online invitation sent on Sunday reminds us of the meeting giving everyone a venue to respond or send prayer requests if one cannot attend. Second issue: Length of the meeting. Solution: Start on time every time. A large issue is being good stewards and respecting each other's time. We need to remain compassionate and open to those who need to share concerns, but we also need to focus on each person's spiritual growth and accountability. The glue that binds: a new covenant sealed with prayer.
In order that we might preserve the life of grace that we experienced on our Walk to Emmaus, we covenant to: -be compassionate to one another -bless and encourage one another -uphold and pray for one another -hold one another accountable for our walk with Christ -be a safe haven for the self expression of others To that purpose, we make the following a priority for Reunion: -prepare our responses ahead of time -follow the service card -be respectful of the group's time -take seriously our call and our plan
Above all, we commit to keep Christ as the head of all that we do and say in reunion group. Thanks be for the sister that knew THE King who could and would put us back together again. Thanks be to the sister who penned this lovely covenant, and the sisters who make this their priority. We still teeter and totter with other obligations, BUT, we are no longer on the wall...we're back on the path.
