Greetings!
Walk 218 is this weekend! Women's Walk 218
Walk 218 at Lake Lavon begins this Thursday, May 14, at 6:30 p.m. with Send-off and a potluck dinner. Candlelight will be held as usual on Saturday night, May 16, beginning at 8:00 p.m. However, this Candlelight will be preceded by the Spring Gathering & Annual Meeting (see details below). Community members are also invited to attend Closing beginning at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 17. Come on out to Lake Lavon and let your presence be a blessing to the Pilgrims of Walk 218.
Even more important than your presence at Walk 218 events are your prayers for the Pilgrims and Team of Walk 218. If you haven't had a chance to sign the paper Prayer Vigil for Walk 218, please visit the Dallas Emmaus Community website and sign the online Prayer Vigil. The online Prayer Vigil supplements (but does not replace) the paper Prayer Vigil that is passed around at Candlelights and other DEC events for signature. Both the hand-signed and the printed online Prayer Vigils are posted during Walks for Pilgrims to see who has been praying for them. |
| Spring Gathering & "Watermelon Seed Spitting!"
DEC Annual Meeting and Potluck Dinner
Picture this....springtime weather, sun setting over the water, delicious food, great fellowship, and Candlelight! Sounds perfect, right? Well, if you can wait until Saturday, May 16, you will be able to experience all that at the 2009 Spring Gathering & "Watermelon Seed Spitting!" This Gathering precedes Candlelight for Walk 218 at Lake Lavon and begins with a potluck dinner at 6:30 p.m. in the Worship Center, followed by the annual meeting of the DEC, including financial and other reports from the Board and the opportunity for questions from the Community to the Board. We will wrap up the meeting in time to set up for Candlelight for Walk 218.
There will also be musician training earlier in the afternoon (beginning at 3:00 p.m.) for anyone wishing to be trained to lead music at Candlelights and on Walks. If interested in attending musician training, please email music@dallasemmaus.org to let them know you're coming!

Making Music Reaches New Heights
On a cool fall day last year, some musicians and the friends that make up the Music Committee got together. It was agreed that Music is such an important part of The Walk that it should be treated accordingly. Most of us probably feel the songbooks are good. but not great, since many of the new songs that have been added that aren't in them. Passing them out and getting everyone on the same page takes time and can slow down the praise and worship experience to a crawl. Computers have been used selectively but not universally on Walks. The only way we have had the benefit of technology so far is when a team member was able to share their personal laptops.
It has been a real help to musicians and everyone on Walks when those laptops were available. According to Susan Crowell, "once music is queued up, it takes less time to go from one song to another and theoretically should allow that more songs can be sung between talks in the conference room. For too many years, we have used overheads on many Walks to add new music and the result were transparencies that were sometimes fuzzy and hard to read." Jay Counts, who is the Board Music Committee Chair, added that "more and more of us are now using PowerPoint for talks and music, so it simply made sense to provide our community, team members, music leaders, etc. with the necessary resources. The ability to project lyrics for the songs we sing on Walks, during Candlelight and at Ggatherings should ultimately eliminate the need for songbooks."
After a recommendation was made to the Dallas Emmaus Board recently, it was decided that a good way to get the words up for everyone to see was using projectors attached to computers loaded with all the songs from old to new that we all love to sing. We have purchased 3 new projectors and 3 new laptops. These will allow us to set up two screens at Candlelight and one in the Conference Room during a Walk weekend. A computer will be available to the Men and Women's teams as they prepare for the next walk. It is important to have all the music at our fingertips, and with the Song Select software we can download all the words to our favorite music easily. Our annual CCLI license allows us to do that and avoid copyright infringement. We have also added Microsoft Office Home and Student to give the team the PowerPoint templates to use when building slide shows for each talk to use in previews and eventually on the weekends.
With change comes a requirement that we adapt. We will need to make the system readily available and user friendly. We are currently working on a practical policy for storing and distributing these resources as quickly and fairly as possible to get the most use and preserve the equipment at the same time. Training will also be made available at some gatherings to demonstrate the new software and how easy it can be to use.

New Emmaus "Purple Worship Book" Still For Sale
The new Emmaus purple worship books recently released by the Upper Room are now being used at all Dallas Emmaus events, including Walks, Candlelights, Closings, Gatherings, etc. The new version of the Emmaus purple worship book is significantly different from the old one, so you will likely want to pick one up the next time you are at a Candlelight or Gathering -- like at Candlelight this Saturday night at Lake Lavon for Walk 218! The new Emmaus purple worship books will continue to be available for sale to the Community at all Candlelights and Gatherings for $3 each. For more details, visit the News page on the DEC website and read the Upper Room announcement. |
