Hello principals and school staff:
You know it is important that we never lose sight of why we became educators. Although, I began my career later than most in education, I knew it was where I was supposed to be. I loved children. I love people. I love talking. But most of all I love helping those who need help the most.
There has been much discussion lately about public education and how the system is broken and that many of the educators are not qualified - and that there needs to be more accountability. And some even believe our salaries are too high for what we do everyday, especially administrators.
What I know is that most educators have various degrees and are still paying off student loans. Most of them work at 10-to-14 hours a day. Principals are on call 24-7. And hardly anyone realizes how much work is taken home or the weekend activities that take them away from their families. And yet I have never heard them complain. Why not? Because the, like me, love their jobs.
Public school is the great equalizer and qualifier. It is where the majority of our greatest leaders have been educated. So, in the midst of all the talk, do not be discouraged or lose site of why you became an educator in the first place - to make a difference in the lives young people.
Our future is bleak only if we choose to look at it that way. I choose to look at the many opportunities that will present themselves no matter what the future brings. Until next week, be encouraged but most of all, be who you were created to be and continue to let your light shine. You know there is a child out there somewhere in the dark who needs to see your light to find their way back home.
