Dear Book Lover:
If you are like me, you are still riding the emotional high of a simply wonderful NBCC weekend. I cannot say we have ever had a more fun, learning, laughing, crying, memorable time. I thank you so much for your wonderful spirit and commitment to reading.
If you missed it, you missed out!!!
Dr. Bertice Berry got us off to an unbelievable start, setting the mood for a stellar conference, and Dr. Cornel West wrapped it up as only he can -- with insights, humor, wisdom and grace. In between, we were simply dazzled by the likes of J. California Cooper, Terry McMillan, Susan Taylor (above with book lovers) Kimberla Lawson Roby, L.Y. Marlow, Victor McGlothlin, Brenda Thomas, Tracie Howard, Hadjii, Travis Hunter and on and on. I did not hear from a single person who did not have his/her literary appetite filled -- and then some!!! Let's look back -- and ahead to 2010.

Pearl Cleage, Terry McMillan. . .
Are Among The Star Authors for 2010
Among the many treats at this year's NBCC was a surprise visit by the renown Pearl Cleage (above right w/Terry McMillan), who treated us us to a reading of her upcoming new book, "Till You Hear From Me: A Post-Obama Romance." Pearl, as well as Terry McMillan, whose new book, Getting To Happy, should be out just before we convene in 2010, both will be with us next year.
We also will have the honor of being joined by Grammy-winner and best-selling author Eddie Levert, Victoria Christopher Murray, Lyah Beth LeFlore, Kimberla Lawson Roby, Virginia DeBerry and Donna Grant, actress Victoria Rowell, ReShonda Tate Billingsley, R.M. Johnson and so many more. The list will be updated throughout the year and you will be alerted via our e-newsletters and website.
In short, we will again lace our roster with the best, most talented and cordial group of authors anywhere.

And the authors, like Kimberla Lawson Roby (above), joined right in. A beautiful evening all the way round.

Book Lovers & Authors Agree
'09 NBCC Was A Special Occasion
Victoria Christopher Murray and Eric Jerome Dickey at '09 NBCC
Just a small sample of what folks are saying:
Barbara Bullocks, Circle of Color, Jackson, MS: "The conference was great. . . Susan Taylor was awesome,
as well as Bertice Berry
and Dr. West along with other guests. J. California Cooper
was wonderful and I felt like after I heard her I could have packed up
and (gone) home. So much wisdom! These are not just speakers, these are
people with words of wisdom and words to change and improve lives."
Ruth Fulton, You Go Girl Book Club, Chicago: "It was the best for my emotional psyche. I was totally amazed by Susan Taylor and Dr. Cornel
West's approachability and their willingness to meet and greet all the
attendees. I also loved Beatrice Berry's song and her frank and in
your face speaking."
Best-selling author Victor McGlothlin: "Can't say how much fun it was to be a featured author this year."
Bebe Moore Campbell Memorial Award recipient, Dr. Bertice Berry: "What an amazing movement you have created. People were so filled with the energy you have brought forth. Folks were in
the session crying, hugging and sharing their lives with one another. . . Amazing."

Honoree Dr. Cornel West
Lively Keynote and Grace Moved Readers
Not only did Dr. Cornel West (above) receive the Walter Mosley Author of Distinction Award, but he delivered a brilliant keynote address, which focused on the power of reading, no less. . . he was a gracious as could be. He took photos and signed books while being mobbed before and after the dinner. And he loved every minute of it. So much so, that he returned to the hotel lobby after 1 a.m. to reconvene with book lovers and sign books, autographs and take photos.
Hundreds of photos from the weekend will be posted on www.nationalbookclubconference.com in the next month (the site is free of contamination). And if you have great photos you would like to share, please e-mail them to me.
