Hello, friends and colleagues,

Alfred State is enjoying a very busy spring semester with faculty, staff, and students doing amazing things on behalf of the college. Some of the semester's noteworthy events:

  • I am pleased to announce that Dr. Derek Wesley will join the campus community on July 1 as the vice president for Institutional Advancement. Derek brings experience and enthusiasm to the role.
  • I'd like to welcome Hollie Hall who joined the President's Office in January as my executive assistant.
  • And I'd like to extend my congratulations and a hearty happy birthday to ACES which is celebrating its 65th year of supporting the college's mission.
  • Alfred State students once again proved their mettle in the 2010 International Student Design Competition held by the Tilt-Up Concrete Association with one team placing third and two teams earning honorable mentions.
  • Early in the semester, we conducted a grand reopening of three recently remodeled residence halls: Peet, Main Gate A, and Main Gate B.The remodeling was done with design help from our faculty and students, which we believe to be unique in the SUNY system.
  • Groundbreaking for our new Student Leadership Center, a unique structure dedicated to fostering leadership and civic engagement in our students, is scheduled for May 6.
  • And, on May 15, we will conduct our 100th Commencement ceremony, adding a few extra bells and whistles for this milestone event.

Budget woes continue to plague New York State, thus SUNY, and thus, Alfred State. However, we continue to be optimistic while we seek ways to cut expenses and generate revenue without compromising the quality of instruction.

Warm regards,
