| NuVal™ Nutritional Scoring System launches at two new retailers |
The NuVal™ Nutritional Scoring System recently launched in two new retailers, each one marking a significant milestone.
Tops Friendly Markets, a leading full-service grocery retailer in upstate New York and northern Pennsylvania, launched the NuVal™ System earlier this spring. With more than 125 retail locations, Tops' launch put the number of supermarkets with NuVal™ Scores to more than 1,000.
"Tops is committed to providing access to resources in order to help consumer make informed nutritional choices when shopping for themselves and their families,"said Frank Curci, Tops' president and CEO. "We're always looking for ways to help our customers navigate through the wide variety of products we offer."
In other news, the NuVal™ System became the first nutritional scoring system to go "coast to coast," as Scolari's Food & Drug launched the system in their 18 stores in Nevada and California.
"With the large amount of nutrition information on food packaging and television advertising from food manufactures, (finding nutritious foods) can become overwhelming," said Joey Scolari, Chief Executive Officer for Scolari's. "The NuVal™ System answers a simple question in an instant: 'What are the most nutritional options on the shelves for my family?'"
The NuVal™ Nutritional Scoring System helps customers make informed nutritional choices in an instant by giving foods on Tops' shelves a NuVal™ Score from 1 to 100;
the higher the score, the better the nutrition.
Scores are posted on retailers' shelves and signs throughout the store, making it easy for customers to compare the overall nutrition of the foods they buy at a glance.
A player in the growing "food ranking" industry, the NuVal™ Nutritional Scoring System is currently in use in more than 1,000 supermarkets in 23 states. The American College of Preventive Medicine (ACPM), a leading organization of some of the country's top physicians committed to preventing disease and promoting health, has officially endorsed the NuVal™ Nutritional Scoring System along with other prevalent medical, scientific and educational institutions.

A note about sodium... |
As you may know, the USDA has recommended that Americans cut their consumption of sodium (to as little as 1,500 mg a day among those over 51 years of age). In response, some food manufacturers are reducing the sodium in their products. More interesting, is that these changes won't be made all at once. One major U.S. food manufacturer recently announced they would reduce sodium in stages to ensure consumers beome accustomed to the new taste. Once consumers have adjusted, the manufacturer will slightly lower the sodium levels again, and so on.
Since sodium levels are taken into account when NuVal™ Scores are calculated, this could mean score changes for a number of products. And by gradually "phasing out" sodium, we may see several score changes in a relatively short amount of time.
