Vilsack visits Hy-Vee
On a recent visit to a Hy-Vee supermarket in Des Moines, IA, Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack (in photo, right)
praised the NuVal Nutritional Scoring System as a possible solution to today's disturbing trends of
obesity, diabetes and other lifestyle-related diseases.

According to a story on RadioIowa.com, Vilsack reviewed the scoring system with Hy-Vee CEO Ric Jurgens (in photo, left), calling NuVal "an opportunity for us to educate consumers about where the nutritious food is and where the nutritional values are."

Vilsack pointed out NuVal could make it easier from consumers who are weary of reading complicated food labels.

The American College of Preventive Medicine (ACPM), a leading organization of some of the country's top physicians committed to preventing disease and promoting health, has officially endorsed the NuVal Nutritional Scoring System as an easy and effective way to help consumers learn about the foods they buy.

"ACPM supports evidence-based and meaningful nutrition labeling that can guide consumers to healthier eating," said ACPM President Mark B. Johnson, MD, MPH, FACPM. "ACPM has reviewed the NuVal nutritional rating system and found that it meets the ACPM criteria for support."
This marks the first time an independent medical/public health organization with national stature has endorsed a non-federal nutrition guidance system, said Dr. David Katz, director and co-founder of the Yale Prevention Research Center and one of the principal inventors behind the NuVal system.

Q&A with Annette Maggi

The higher the NuVal Score, the better the nutrition.

Q&A with Annette Maggi on Her New Blog
AnnetteMaggi

This week, NuVal's Senior Nutritionist Annette Maggi, MS RD, launches her new blog, Nutrition Outlook (check it out here). It's NuVal's latest blog, giving a different take on our approach to nutrition and food in general. We asked her what readers can expect.

What will be the focus of Nutrition Outlook?
The goal of the blog is to get people to think more broadly about food and their eating habits.  I also hope to provide a filter to people.  There's so much nutrition information out there today, and it needs to be put into context.

Who is the target audience for this blog?
Both consumers and health professionals.  The juncture of the two will lead to some interesting discussions.

Have you seen yourself as a blogger?
I have two published books to my credit, and I've always been a writer.  But blogging is a whole different style.  It will be fun to engage in nutrition in this format.

What topics will you cover in Nutrition Outlook?
It will run the gamut from what's hot in the news that day to more global discussions around nutrition. Kids' nutrition, busy moms trying to get dinner on the table, living healthy in the long term--it will all get covered.

There are lots of health/fitness blogs out there now. How is yours different? Often, we get bogged down in the details of nutrition, and focus on individual nutrients.  My goal is to bring it up to a higher level, challenge all of us to think more comprehensively about eating habits and food.
