I have a few simple goals for this newsletter. First, I want it to inspire you to move towards your professional and personal goals. Third, I want it to be fun to read! Whether you strive to improve your business' performance, discover a more satisfying career path, or lead your organization through a period of transition, this newsletter will be an important resource for you in the year ahead.

Do you have a question for the coach or would you like to suggest that a particular topic be included? Let me hear from you! Send me your questions or suggestions at carolyn@newchaptercoach.com or go to the website and leave a message at Contact Us. Finally, and most importantly, I hope you enjoy the newsletter and share it with others you think will too.

Leading Change In Challenging Times

Though executive directors are well-known for carrying superhuman burdens, this is no time for single-handed heroics. If a nonprofit is facing a crisis of any magnitude, the executive director's most urgent task is to communicate accurately the size and scope of the crisis to the board of directors. That open and honest communication will enable the executive and board of directors to tackle the organization's challenges strategically and as a team.

Their first task will be to communicate the urgency of the problem to others. A well-conceived call to action that appropriately expresses a sense of urgency and a vision for change will lead the organization in the direction of proactive, transformative change. Read the rest of the article

Coaching Done Better: Enhanced Communication For Less Money

New Chapter Coaching is moving coaching to the next generation through its use of cutting edge technologies for coaching. New Chapter Coaching now offers videoconferencing for its remote coaching clients. To date, the industry standard has been for coaching to take place via phone. Now, with free software that enables phone communication through the computer (Skype) and a web camera, the "call" costs nothing!

One study at UCLA indicated that up to 93 percent of communication effectiveness is determined by nonverbal cues. Another study indicated that the impact of a performance was determined 7 percent by the words used, 38 percent by voice quality, and 55 percent by the nonverbal communication.

At New Chapter Coaching, everything our clients communicate is critical to the success we expect them to achieve while working with us. This technology enhances the standard coaching done by phone. Contact us today to find out more about this new service and to arrange your FREE 30-minute introductory session

Creating Opportunities With Your Attitude
Handstand on mtnSo many of us are being tested these days. Hiring freezes. Layoffs. Careers interrupted. Salary reductions. Big belt tightening. Double income families down to single income. Plans changed. Stress.

With all that's going on today, it's easy to have a negative, pessimistic, or fatalistic attitude. It's easy to think that you just can't get ahead until the economy turns around. Or until the hiring freeze lifts. Or until your partner gets a new job. Or.... The fact of the matter is that you can start moving forward with your life as soon as you determine to do so. And that's regardless of the state of the economy. I don't care what the stock market does or how high the unemployment rate is: if you set your intention on a particular goal, you will achieve it.  Read the rest of the article.
New Chapter Coaching In The News
I can honestly tell you that I never aspired to be in a centerfold, but I was this week. Fortunately, it was the centerfold of the Columbia Business Times, the premiere source of business coverage in Columbia. The paper did a special feature about the latest use of online marketing strategies and highlighted New Chapter Coaching's strategies. FB Here are a few excerpts!

"...after she launched her business, New Chapter Coaching, she quickly saw Facebook's marketing potential. "I use it to keep my business in the minds of my friends and family," Sullivan said. "That allows referral opportunities in a business where a referral is most important." She's also a member of LinkedIn, another networking site that caters to business professionals, and is in the Columbia Chamber of Commerce online directory. But Facebook generates most of her Web site's visitors. Sullivan already has a blog on her Web site that provides professional development tips and will soon begin producing videos with a "coaching tip of the month."

Reduce Stress For More Success

Stress cartoonAccording to data from the American Psychological Association's newly released 2008 Stress in America survey, women are bearing the brunt of the nation's stress.  Compared with men, women repeatedly report being more stressed about money, the economy, job stability, housing costs, and health problems affecting their families. Mature women (+63) reported the most dramatic increases in stress, in some instances up as much as 18% from the prior year.

Women were more likely than men to report physical symptoms associated with their increased stress. Their symptoms include such problems as:

fatigue
irritability
headaches
feeling depressed or sad
disrupted sleeping and eating habits

So if you're suffering from a high stress level, what can you do to better cope with it? Read the coach's suggested action items, Reduce Stress For More Success.
