OK Supreme Court Invalidates HD71 Election

The Special Election in House District 71 was invalidated by the Oklahoma Supreme Court on April 30. The seat will remain vacant until the Nstate capitolovember election. The Tulsa League is disappointed that nearly 3,000 voters had their legitimately-cast votes invalidated. We are also disappointed that the residents of HD71 will be without representation in Oklahoma City for 13 months.

Through an amicus brief, the League had urged the court to require the Tulsa County Election Board to count every legitimately-voted ballot in the April 3 special election to fill the unexpired term in HD71.Through the brief and in oral arguments, the League said simply: the mistake of an election official to bring all legitimately-voted ballots to the hand recount should not affect the election outcome. In our democracy, no candidate should win an election on a technicality.

Thank you Board Member (and attorney) Ron Wilkinson for both writing the brief and presenting our position to the Oklahoma Supreme Court.

League Unites Against the War on Women

The League joined marchers in 35 states on April 28 when we sent a busload to Oklahoma City for the march and rally to Uni
te Against the War on Women. Norman League Member Mary Francis represented us publicly at the rally. Thank you to our friends at Hope Unitarian Church who helped us fill the bus. It was also a great day to register voters. In this photo, League members Celia Powles and Deborah Whittaker (wo)man the registration table.

Special thanks to Board Member Deborah Whittaker and Office Volunteers Lynn Rivers and Connie Seibold who made this day happen for the League.
